Any suggestions for Sicily? Particularly looking for smaller city suggestions to visit over the obvious larger cities (Palermo, Taormina). Thanks

Never been to Sicily. On my to-do list. We have a place in Monopoli. We love Southern Italy.
Some recs for Southern Italy if you end up on that side of the coast: Monopoli, Lecce, Ostuni, Alberobello, Matera, and Polignano a Mare.

What do you like about it so much? I've only done northern. I will say the more north you go, the worst the food is. I'm saying that from a 10/10 in, lets say Florence/Rome to 8/10 overall in the foot hills and mountains of Italy.,

Smaller towns we really enjoyed were Ragusa Ibla and Noto.

Great food, beautiful women, excellent beaches, great little cities, people are extremely family oriented and friendly, no migrant issues, and very inexpensive.

I really want to make it down there. I'm sure you've been asked this before, but what's the best way to get to monopoli from the states?

I rented a car in Catania, then drove to Taormina, Cefalu, Palermo.
Taormina and Cefalu are wonderful. Palermo was fine.
Use Sixt REntal Car.

In Taormina we stayed down on the water, and the drive down the cliff on a thousand year old road, doing switchbacks and coming around blind corners made me want to call the whole thing off for a minute.
Other than that, no. the highways are incredibly easy.
Palermo was kind of crazy at big intersections, but I made it. It's not that bad, you got it in you.

Cefalu is the perfect small town. North shore, not far from Palermo.

My maternal gradparents are from a small mountain village about an hour inland from Catania and had a place until the past couple of years.
Syracusa is great. Really enjoyed it. If you go, there's a great little market / sandwich shop I can point you to.
Marina di Ragusa is an awesome beach city. Highly recommend.
Marzamemi is a cool little city to walk through.
Go climb the steps and walk around in Caltagirone.
Taorimina is of course worth the stop. As is Cefalu.
One day I'll spend 2 weeks on the island driving the coast and then the inland mountain towns.
Sicily is great, but it can also be a bit shocking in it's lack of infrastructre.

We went to Sicily last year on a tour; 16 people in the group. About 16 nights total. We flew into Palermo and out of Catania.

We stayed in Palermo, Marsala (SW side), Piazza Armerina, Ragusa, and Catania. We stayed 3 nights in most places except Pizza Armerina where we only stayed 1. We wanted to be near Vila Romana del Casale for an early start.
We went a day early to go to Cefalu for the day because my wife's family is from there. As part of the tour we did day trips to places such as Castelbuono, Mothya Island and Taromina.
Marsala, Mazara del Vallo, Ragusa, were all great. The hotels in Palermo and Catania were near the historical areas and we didn't feel like we were in a bigger city.
Is there anything you are particularly interested in? For example, there is a Cathedral in Cefalu and one in Monreal that were built by Norman Kings. You can hire a tour guide to take you to both and tell you all about them.
Or, near Agrigento there are Greek temples if that interest you. There are several museums in Catania including a WW II one. We didn't go to any but there are sights near Taromina where scenes from the Godfather were filmed.
It's hard to pick a favorite place but I guess my top 3 would be Catania, Ragusa and Mazara del Vallo.

Nothing specifically we are interested in seeing. Last year we spent a week in Cortona, a small mountain town in Tuscany. Absolutely loved it. Looking for a similar small town feel in Sicily. I appreciate all of the recommendations and will investigate. Going in March next year.
