Email I just received from Roku. Pretty soon we will be back to square one where it's just as easy and practical to have traditional TV again.

quote:

Dear Roku Customer,

We are sending this email to update you on the possibility that Google may take away your access to the YouTube TV channel on Roku. Recent negotiations with Google to carry YouTube TV have broken down because Roku cannot accept Google’s unfair terms as we believe they could harm our users.

Ensuring a great streaming experience at an exceptional value is the core of our business. We will always stand up for our users, which is why we cannot accept Google's unfair and anticompetitive requirements to manipulate your search results, impact the usage of your data and ultimately cost you more.

While we are deeply disappointed in Google’s decision to use their monopoly power to try and force terms that will directly harm streamers, we remain committed to reaching an agreement with Google that preserves your access to YouTube TV, protects your data and ensures a level playing field for companies to compete. We encourage you to contact Google and urge them to reach an agreement to continue offering YouTube TV on Roku and to follow standard industry practices pledging not to require access to sensitive search data or to manipulate your search results.

Thank you,

Roku

**UPDATE**

Roku has now removed YouTube TV from their channel store. If you already have the app downloaded to your device you're still good for now.

YouTube doesn’t carry Bally Sports so no local Major League Baseball, NHL or NBA for me with YouTubetv. Not sure if they got NFL network again. Seems to miss a ton of channels if you enjoy sports.

I think AT&T is the only streaming option for Bally Sports. Bootleg streams and Chromecast have worked so far for that.

Live tv does seem like an easier option every year that passes. The problem with going with live tv is you lose the catalogue of all the movies on Netflix/Disney/Hulu. That’s a big amount.
Does cable come with a lot of movies on demand?

So wonder which one is happening...

Google trying to cut out paying fees to Roku OR Roku trying to up the fees on Google

Having Cable/Satellite does not keep you from signing up from any streaming service to supplement.

Details: Roku says Google is threatening the removal of YouTube TV to force Roku to grant preferential access to its consumer data moving forward.

It says Google has asked Roku to do things that it does not see replicated on other streaming competitors' platforms, like creating a dedicated search results row for YouTube within the Roku smart TV interface and giving YouTube search results more prominent placement.
Roku says Google has also required it to block search results from other streaming content providers while users are using the YouTube app on Roku's system.
Roku alleges Google has asked it to favor YouTube music results from voice commands made on the Roku remote while the YouTube app is open, even if the user's music preference is set to default to another music app, like Pandora.
Roku says Google has threatened to require Roku to use certain chip sets or memory cards that would force Roku to increase the price of its hardware product, which competes directly with Google's Chromecast.
Be smart: A key issue for Roku — other than that Google is asking it to manipulate search results that favor Google's products — is that it believes Google is trying to tie the renewal of YouTube TV's distribution contract with Roku to force additional anticompetitive benefits for Google's separate YouTube app.

Lots of stuff from Roku there... if it was like the last dispute with ATT over HBO Max... All about money. Roku wants a piece of every subscription service

Disputes like this are why I've got a Roku, Nvidia Shield and Chromebox attached to my main TV. This helps prevent the skunks from locking me out.

I am generally happy with YouTube TV but I’m pretty mad they bumped up the price right after the RSN renegotiations (presumably to pay for those new contracts) and then they lost the RSNs anyway less than a year later.

As for this thread, is my TCL roku tv about to be worthless for me unless I buy a new device to stream YouTube TV?

Buy a new Chromecast with Google TV and a remote for $50 and you're covered.

They'll come to terms pretty quickly on this since Roku has the largest market share of streaming devices. HBOMax felt this when they first launched.

I am about done with Youtube anyways because of Bally Sports. How are you guys watching currently? Trying to watch the braves, I'm in market though - SC, so MLB isn't an option.

Youtube removed it from the Roku store, and according to Roku's email, it'll still work until youtube forces them to stop.

Yea, I just got the email. But still.

I’m not getting rid of the 10 Roku devices I have everywhere. So I’ll switch to a different service if I have to. I don’t want to.
