Why is bike/scooter sharing so popular?

I put this on the tech board since we’re seeing a lot of tech companies enter this space, and honestly, I don’t understand it.

What’s the use case for someone riding a bike around for a short period of time? What problem is this solving?

Huge here in Nashville. The damn scooters were so bad the police swooped in and confiscated about 3500 within an hour.

A real menace to traffic because people are flying down the street in middle-of-the-day traffic.

It should be on the Poli board because politics is the reason.

Short trips in cities with limited parking. I've used bike share in NYC and it was great.

I use Mobike in China, and it is a good transportation option for me. Maybe you are missing that you don't have to return the bike from where you got it. You just lock it at your destination and walk away.

Pretty big here in DC as well. You use an app on your phone to find the nearest bike (which isn't far), ride to where you're going, hop off and leave the bike.

If you live in an area where parking is a huge challenge this can be a great way to get around.

How is this better or more convenient than Uber?

ETA: Also, I can’t imagine doing this in a lot of cities. It seems like for this to work, the city would have to be SUPER friendly to cyclists.

It isn’t for going long distances across town. However, it works well if you only need to go a mile or so. Of course, it helps to be in a bike friendly area.

It generally costs less and most people in bike-friendly cities aren't fat so biking a few miles isn't a big deal.

Millenials like it because they believe they're helping the environment. Also in places like New Orleans if you own a bike it will more than likely be stolen soon so you don't have to worry about that either.

Dallas has the bikes everywhere and we are not considered "bike friendly" although it has become more bike friendly the last 10 years or so. The problem with the rental bikes that you can leave anywhere is it creates bike clutter everywhere. The City of Dallas is about to crack down on the bike companies over this issue.

Birmingham isn't really bike friendly, and we have it. Pretty sure you have to return the bikes to the designated bike racks here, but not sure. I've never seen them not in one of the designated racks. Only time I tried to use it, the bikes weren't really comfortable for my 6'4" frame, so we used Uber instead.
