I haven't used antivirus software in 10+ years but when I did it was AVG. Just manage what I do and open and eliminate it.

Windows Defender is plenty sufficient, as long as you aren’t a complete idiot.

Is this a windows PC? Just use Windows' built in software. It's actually legit.

I have used Kaspersky for over five years. Never had a virus when running Windows and now I use it on my Mac.

From the research that I had done, Kaspersky was/is the leader in anti-virus detection.

But Russia, Russia, Russia ...

If it is free, you are the product.

Windows defender is sufficient for most, if not buy a Sophos/Carbon Black/Cylance/Vipre.

I also have a Win10 virtual machine in VMware that I only use as a sandbox for opening sketchy files/downloads to have that extra layer of protection.
