The iphone 8 says it will charge wirelessly. Ok, but I still have to plug in the charging station and now I have to place my iphone on the charging mat? Is that correct? If so, wouldn't it be better to use the cord so you can still use your phone?

Or am I incorrect? If so, what is the charging radius?

I had it on my last moto and didn't see any benefit...charged way slower. I much prefer to plug it into the turbo charger.

I've never had wireless charging, but I guess the one benefit is being able to set it down on the charger when you're on the fly, or when you're half asleep and its dark you don't have to root around for the cord. Don't think you'd want it to be your only option, definitely have a regular cord in addition

shite, I was going to get the 8 for wireless charging, but if that's the best thing about it, I guess I'll go with the 7 instead. There has got to be more?

It lessens wear and tear on ports which some people apparently have issues with. It's also more convenient. Other than that, nothing that I'm aware of.

Thanks for the info everyone.

So if I don't care for the wireless charging feature is the 8 even worth it, or should I go with the 7?

Is the camera significantly better?

I see the benefit more in places that will begin to support it more than at home.

If you have a built in mat on a newer car, that would be nice. Restaurants and coffee shops having mats would be great too.

I like wireless charging because it is easy and quick. If other people made it available, that would be great, too. I'm just not sure that practically speaking it provides too many benefits.

That would be pretty cool. To answer OP, I'd rather have the feature than not have it, but wouldn't base my decision off of it. I'd rather get a phone that has a better battery and doesn't need to be charged multiple times a day. Then your charging method isn't as important. I have a Nexus 6P right now and that's my biggest gripe by far is battery life

Just convenience. I have the wireless charger on my nightstand. Just set it on there. Nothing to unplug if I need to use it. Also can look over and see the clock.

It's nice to be able to just put your phone down on your desk, nightstand, or car mount and have it charging, without having to deal with the cable or unplugging it every time you pick it up.

I hate tripping over wires.

I hate when you trip over the wire it yanks it out which damages the port, which makes it harder to plug back in and fricks it up.

the ultimate would be a metal-backed phone and a magnetic qi charger in your car that you can simply place your phone against to both charge the phone and hold it in place.

unfortunately, wireless charging has limited benefit in vehicles because it doesn't charge fast enough to handle the battery drain if you're streaming music and running navigation AND have the screen on the whole time.

thats the problem, maybe the new qi 2.1 standard will help but until then, you're gonna need a cable in your car if you're using your phone for all that or buy a vehicle with android or ios built-in and those typically provide UBER-SHITTY versions of your favorite apps with crippled functionality.

The benefit of wireless charging is that it eliminates a major water leak path into the interior of the phone, making for decreased potential for water damage. That is why all the portable electronics makers are moving to wireless headphones as well.

The biggest benefit I can see is me using a wireless at work on my desk. I can grab it when I walk away from desk and just set it down when I get back.

Unless I missed something, no one is removing the traditional charging port.

Wireless charging is an added feature. So you can still charge through a traditional cable, but have the option to charge wirelessly as well. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is the ability to charge multiple devices with only one mat/plug/cable. So if you have a watch and a phone, only need one mat.

I also like the ability that it can use universal charging locations, such as factory installed in a car, airports, coffee shops, etc.

Except for the glass back, I don't see the downfall of the added feature.
