Tracking device for teen driver

What the best product to put in his car without him knowing?
I know like Apple air tags will alert his phone a device is near by and other products I’ve seen like Tile you have to be in bluetooth range.
*not my kid. update below

Is this the norm?

Is there a particularly reason why you are more interested in “trapping” him in doing something wrong than you are simply knowing where he is/that he’s safe?

Track his phone with Find my iPhone, you’re paying for his service/device I bet.
Tile just needs to be in Bluetooth range of ANY phone that has the Tile app on it, not just your phone.
You already know he’s apparently up to no good, what is going this extra step going to get you?

Because he’s a teenager and will do anything to get into shite, including somehow ditching his Apple AirTags.
Just remember, these teenagers know more about technology than you ever have and they talk and exchange their methods.

I think you misunderstand the purpose of my question. The kid not knowing he is being tracked is about punishing him; telling him he’s being tracked and telling him that if he ever so much as looks for the tag(I like either under the carpet in the trunk or taped up next to the cabin air filter, personally) much less removes it, the car is gone, is about keeping the kid safe.
As to the second part of your post, I very much doubt it. But if OP wants instructions on how to physically disable the internal speaker so it doesn’t set off an alarm every time the kid walks away from the car, I’m happy to help. Did as much before putting an AirTag in my dog’s collar. Didn’t want it to annoy him when I wasn’t around

Glad I don’t have this problem with my kid. This stems from way more than just wanting to track him. Failed parenting, unfortunately. Best of luck

Not my kid.
Family member but not close enough for me to insert myself other than doing some research to pass on.
That being said… any legit recommendations?

1. Cellular enabled tracking device can be wired or some have batteries that can probably last a month. I’m not sure, just an educated guess. I’ve only used wired ones to track business equipment. It’s going to cost $3-10 per month. For a few bucks more you can connect to the car and get driving behaviors. If you do an OBD one, you can either hide it or say it’s required for the insurance company.
2. Track phone like everyone else.

Yet you come here knowing there are probably no teens on these boards and ask?

Ummm you put Life 360 on his phone and its non-negotiable to remove or turn it off. Nut up and be a parent and lay down the rules

I was gonna say Life360 is probably the best option but a paid service. However, it has crash detection, speed detection, etc.
That is provided your teenager has a cell phone AND it's on them/in the car.
It sucks to have to do this in todays age but I'll probably be going that route in a few years when my daughter is teenage age.

its got 2GB data (works as a hotspot) and 3 free AAA 'events per year (unlocking keys locked in car, towing, etc.)
have used it for 6 or so years and its been flawless; was even able to see exactly how fast she was going when she had an accident and could follow the path of her car off the road.

you can get AAA cheaper but if you want the added benefit of knowing exactly where your college age daughter is when she ran out of gass, its great. you just click 'send AAA' in the app and done.
my daughter called me one time at 130am and said "i just came out of a club with my friends and my keys are locked in my car" and i hit a couple of buttons and said 'they'll be there in 20 minutes, just hang out in your friend's car and text me when you're safe"
dumb girl never made the connection that i didn't ask where she was or how AAA found her so fast or THANK YOU DAD FOR HAVING A SERVICE TO FIX ME WHEN I'M STUPID.
ETA in my defense; its my little girl and i'll be damned if she's going to get into an accident out in the middle of nowhere without dad being in 'guardian angel' mode. fight me.

Life360 can be tricked. Plenty of tutorials online.

Plenty of content on Youtube from teens on how to disable that unnecessary mommy shite (Life360 when you already have FindMyiPhone).
Unless he controls what gets installed or disabled on a non jailbroken phone, it's all a waste of time.
OP, distance yourself from this problem. You may offer a supposed solution offered by the OT, and it won't work because of teenage malfeasance, or female acquiescence, and you'll get blamed. Tell him to ask the Apple store.

If the car is a GM within the last few model years you should be able to track it via the GM app.
I can see where our 2020 Traverse is in real time via the Chevrolet app. Not sure if you have to have an active OnStar subscription or not (we do).

I have a 17 yr old and haven't ever tracked her.
Has she done dumb shite? Probably. Did I when I was that age? Absolutely.
Personally, I feel like we are stunting the development of a sense of independence for kids that age. They are absolutely going to push boundaries. I'd expect it.

I think helicopter parenting is a negative thing for development and society.

Why not turn on Find My iPhone and then password protect the Location area of the phone. They won't be able to change the location settings on each app, so they can't disable Find My iPhone.

I'll offer some experienced suggestions. As a family, everyone put Life360 on their phone. Non-negotiable for the kid.
Have a "Come-to-Jesus" meeting with the kid. Man-to-man. Tell him everything you have can be be lost with stupid decisions. The same goes for him. Everything he has can be lost. Then lay down the law.
Tell him what the rules are. No explaining details. No what-ifs. If he breaks a rule, any rule, he loses the car and has to earn it back like a man.
It isn't enough to be a "good parent". You have to teach cause/effect, and consequences. When we were kids, something stupid got you in trouble or hurt. Today, something stupid gets you arrested and triples insurance rates.
