Theater System

Hello, I've never posted on the tech board, but I figured this is the right place for this. I am remodeling our living room at the moment, and I'd like to upgrade the entertainment system for this space. Right now the room is gutted to the studs. I will have a TV above the fireplace, a record player, blue-ray/dvd player, and an old xbox. I'd like something more substantial than my regular tv speakers that won't break the bank. Can anyone advice me on a system, positioning of speakers, and maybe what wiring you would recommend running? TV will be in front of the couch and the record player, dvd player, and xbox will be behind the couch on top of some cabinets. I know nothing about sound systems, fyi. The room is basically a rectangle with one door entrance.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

i'm not being sarcastic, but have you considered plugging all of this into AI (room dimensions, floor type, equipment model #s, etc.) along with your request to 'not break the bank' and see what it recommends?
that way you can avoid snarky responses on here from people who may look down on a certain component you have and you should get a proper plan to optimze the space and shopping list of both "high" and "low" cost solutions.
you can even take a pic of your room and it will render its suggestions so you can even see how it will look.
Just a thought.

Not a bad idea. I have no considered that, but I will definitely give that a shot.

warning, this is a gateway drug
once you see how easy it is to plan an update like this using AI you'll end up using it for all manner of things.

Get a Mantel Mount. I have two MM815s and they're awesome.

This is the way.
ETA:
just go ahead and run speaker wire for a 7.2 system. You dont have to get it all, but running the wires now is very cheap insurance.

running the wires now
Before the drywall goes up, the people running Ethernet are making $16 an hour, and they can do the job in 2 hours (I used to do this shite.) After drywall goes up, the time/price doubles because you have fish tape involved.
I advise running wire to locations (playroom, media, living room, etc.) with two jacks, no just one. The amount of effort and cost to pull two wires vs. one is inconsequential (you tape both the wires to each to each other before you pull them to the home run.)

You think I make decisions about where things go in my home?

I already have neck pain. I don't need my tv making it worse!

I wanted all wireless for my living room, so I went with the high-end Sony wireless system. Sounds great.

I’m not sure why that’s a big deal. 1st thing I do is put a TV above the fire place.
Nobody wants to look at a smaller TV to the left or right of the mantel.
