oh, they just added the name air behind iPad. I was thinking the Macbook air...

When you say (just) iPad, I assume you mean the 4th gen, which was originally released in October 2012. It has a 9.7" retina screen and starts at $399. It replaced the iPad 2 at that price point earlier this year. It has the A6X processor, retina display, & lightning connector.
The iPad Air also has a 9.7" retina screen but is thinner in all 3 dimensions and 30% lighter than the 4th gen. It also has an A7 Processor which boasts 2x the CPU performance compared to the A6X. Starts at $499.
The iPad Mini with retina display has the same hardware as the Air, except the screen is squashed to 7.9" diagonal but maintains the same resolution and it starts at $399.

the air is probably the best built tablet, but its price is a real problem.
if you look at the chatter on why ipad sales are disappointing, they point to two things
1) its expensive. Do I want to spend $500-700, when I can get a damn good android tablet for $350? What do I get for the $150-300?
2) the ipad is a well built machine and has a longer lifespan than a galaxy table
re, 2. I have an iPad 3, purchased in 2012. It works great for my purposes but it does hiccup on a work app. My work's solution is to tell me to buy a new ipad. I have told them to frick off. Some vendor I work with bought me an air to use indefinitely, and it works great. Much better than the 3, BUT the 3 does everything I need. why would I spend more $$?

I have a 3 too. It does hiccup sometimes, but i use it mostly for reading and netflix which are easy. I'd love to have an Air, but is spending $500 worth it when I have a pretty good one already?

exactly.
I am trying to get work to buy me a galaxy. we need to certify on android, and how can we do that unless we (or one of the people that work for me) have an android device? My boss disagrees.

$500 for something you will use as much as you will use an iPad and for as long is not a lot of money. When I traded in my original iPads I had passed down to my kids in for Minis back in the fall they were almost four years old and worked like the day I got them out of the box.
I get a new one every two years and I count that $500 every two years as the best bang for the buck for pretty much anything I've ever owned.
Hell, good running shoes are $150. A few nights in a decent hotel is $500. Dropping $500 on an iPad every two years is a steal considering what I get out of that.
Also, remember that people were expecting the iPad to have an entry point of $1000+ leading up to it's release.

I strayed from the iPhone, but I don't think I'd ever stray from the iPad to another tablet.

until apple figures out how to make it easy to transfer files without relying on itunes, i can't see how their mobile products would ever win this

It depends on the files and the use. I rarely use itunes to transfer files and I mostly use my ipad for pdfs, but also word, ppt, pictures. I transfer and view most files using goodreader, which is a straightforward wifi transfer using the app. Also I use the Dropbox app to view files I've placed there.
But I agree that I generally hate itunes.

The only reason that the iPad wins out in the tablet market is because of apps. The apps optimized for iPad are far and away better than the Android tablet optimized apps. There are dozens of apps that we use for my kids that have been available as iPad apps for almost 3 years. They don't even have an Android phone version of many of those apps yet, much less an Android tablet optimized version.

They did figure out a way, iCloud Drive.
ETA: or you could use AirDrop, but you have to have a Mac for that.

AirDrop creates an ad hoc network directly between the computer and phone/tablet. Still need a wireless connection for iCloud Drive though.

Well, the reviewer in the article is a little goofy about how he states this. He calls the MSP3 too big and bulky, then he goes on to say the ipad has more games than any other platform. That's extremely false given the number of games available on Windows 8.1, run by, among other, the MSP3.
But alas, the best tablet is the one that does what the user wants at the price they're happy to pay for it. Regardless of OS, specs, apps, et al.
