Teach Me What I Need to Know About XMBC/KODI

Hey Tech Board,
So i just purchased a Matricom G-Box Q Quad/Octo Core[2GB/16GB/4K] from Amazon. It's sort of for me, but really for the girlfriend. In my home setup I run a ROKU with Plex and websites to stream content. My girlfriend wants all that content at her place, but isn't tech savy and it's like teaching a 2nd grader Calculus to teach her how torrents, streaming sites, etc work.
I'm completely new to XMBC myself. I know nothing. Besides a basic understanding of what it is. So I have a ton of questions and scouring the interwebs for YouTube videos, forums, etc basically to wrap my head around getting this thing up and running with the right apps so she can watch all the free tv and movies she wants.
What apps do i need to get installed?
ETA:
How can i set it up so that she can simply browse like a TV guide or movie service (like Netflix). Or are things all spread out over different apps and different streaming sites?

It's ok to admit you are a failure

Yes.
I admit that I have been blind in my use of a Roku and downloading torrents for so long. It was a waste of time and energy. I was stubborn, but have seen the light now.
I need my interwebz friends to guide me towards streaming everything nirvana.
Right now the apps I think I need are:
- Genesis
- Phoenix
- Navi
What else?

Klark, you're better than this. There are probably three threads a week on XBMC here.
That being said, rather than installing XBMC/Kodi, you can use TVMC, which is basically XBMC with lots of good shite (Genesis, Ice Films, etc) preloaded.

From the thread half way down the first page.
Here you go!

I wish someone would do a Kodi for dummies or link it to me. I have no idea what it is or how it can help me watch free shite.

Thanks fellas.
After some research it seems pretty straight forward. As soon as I'll get it, I'll throw TVMC on it, and be ready to go.
Then I'll just use Genesis to add all her favorite TV shows to auto-update for her. Should be easy as pie for her now.

Amazon suggested one of those mini keyboards when I picked the GBox up, but is that really necessary unless you are using the browser a whole bunch?

That box will likely come with an outdated version of Kodi.
Beyond the scope of what you asked, but unless you really want to use that box (or any Amlogic chipset) to run Android apps, I'd flash it with an openelec rom.

my head.
i get the OS might be out-dated and I'll have to update Kodi and the firmware straight out of the box. but what's openelec?

I realize this is more technical than you asked for, but it's here for information. Besides, I'm curious how you arrived at getting an Amlogic android box and not a Fire stick or Fire TV like the rest of the board? I use an Asus Chromebox running openelec on my primary TV.
The problem with boxes like the one you've ordered is poor vendor firmware implementation. There's usually things that don't work, like HDMI audio passthru or 24p video. A lot of times you can find a better custom firmware to load.
You can find more info at freaktab.com
The hardware in the G-Box Q is based on M8&M9 V1.0 PCB found in Eny / SZTomato M8 box, but they’ve doubled internal storage (16 vs 8 GB), and used a Wi-Fi module that supports 802.11ac, probably AP6335.
Options for your hardware:
1) Stock android firmware (matricom firmware)
2) Custom android firmware/rom (megatron is an example build)
3) Custom openelec/linux firmware (codesnake's openelec build is an example)

Remember, it's "stealing." So know that beforehand before you pull a Rex.

When I buy a steaming box for myself I will most likely come back and seek the advice on which hardware to get it.
But this box is for my old lady and just needs to be cheap and dirty quick fix.
I do appreciate the advice tho fellas

BUMP.
So, I'm back as I suspected I would be. The old lady loves her GBox (we actually moved in together). Now i'm looking to get another streaming box for the man cave and one for the bedroom.
Matricom makes a decent product. I'll give them that. I've had no issues to date. But I wanted to revisit this topic to see if there was a better alternative as previously mentioned, like the Asus Chromebox.
Is it really worth shelling out the extra $40-50 when the picture quality and stream quality are going to be about the same regardless of the hardware?

well there are differences like passing through the HD audio codecs (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA), frame rate switching, frame-packed 3D capabilities.
I use a Chromebox on primary tv and a fire stick and Nexus player on other TVs

maybe i should swap out the GBox in the living room with the ChromeBox I'm about to order then.
