my hp caught fire from overheating I guess while i wasn't home this past weekend.

I don't want anything super fancy. I basically use it for school stuff, iTunes, and general Interneting.

Not looking to spend anymore than say around 600. At least a 500gb hard drive.

Any reqs are welcomed and appreciated.

Got my wife this for the same applications:

Only complaint is the touchpad, it BLOWS. But we added a wireless mouse and all is well.

Wasn't gonna, actually, until you asked in the other thread. These threads are usually boring, except when someone inevitably makes a sweeping statement about a particular brand.

UltimateHog already linked the one I would suggest. (the i7 Acer with the 1080p display.) Nothing better than that, spec-wise, for $600.

I'll continue to help if OP decides he needs something more specific (bigger/smaller screen, 2-in-1, etc.).

I'd want something smaller than that one, preferably without the key pad on the side there.

Gets tougher at your budget when you go smaller. 14" and down, you're basically looking at a standard $300 POS, or $700-800+ ultrabooks/2-in-1 if you want similar specs, and not much in between. There are a few, but you do lose some specs in favor of portability.

A few at bestbuy: LINK

Of the 3, the Toshiba is most appealing to me.
