Speaking of Microsoft jacking Windows 10 users by forcing them to upgrade to run Win11...

Somebody filed a class action lawsuit, alleging monopolistic practices, alleging screwed a huge amount of Win 10 users.

As pissed off as I am about it, I had to upgrade 7 PC's at my office, I actually think the suit is pretty baseless. They can update their software to end of life support for older machines anytime they want. Nothing monopolistic about that.
However that's the chance they take to feel the wrath of thier customers...

Link sucks but only one I could find. Can still read article without clicking on terms.

well that and the fact i have 2 perfectly good PCs including the one running my Plex server that are unable to update to Win11 thanks to the hoops MSFT makes you jump through.

In the same boat. I still need to look into putting linux on it but I don't love the idea of buying an external hard drive just to temporarily store my content while making the switch.

I don't know if this is helpful but this a demo of using Ubuntu with a minimal desktop to run Plex...

Please note that the installation of Plex as a snap package on Ubuntu simplifies the complexities of setting up permissions on your media storage.

To run optimally, Microsoft's AI needs a piece of hardware called a neural processing unit, which newer tablets, laptops and desktop computers have — and which the older devices do not.

I hate this. An NPU absolutely isn't required, but they wrote it with the qualifier "optimal," to obfuscate the situation.

Every OS and app nearly forces upgrades. I'm not sure if you've noticed, but there are sites that force you to update your browser to the absolute latest rev (I mean the bi-weekly or monthly releases, not forcing you to use something other than IE6, for example) to function.

MS's practice of deprecating CPUs as unsupported on a rolling basis in Win11, which stops security updates, is a bigger issue. And no, the registry hacks don't prevent this from happening.

Well I need Copilot to work right when I ask it how to disable the Copilot button and may it Ctrl again. Past that I'm good.

It’s optimal because it allows or will allow Microsoft to offload embeddings, vision, tts, and ocr type stuff to the edge so they don’t have to pay for it themselves.

You guys know you can simply disable the check for things like TPM, CPU, etc so that Win11 can be installed? Ask Google for the OOBE registry settings.

On the plus side, Debian 13 (Trixie) was finally released last Friday :)

Ya I tried to install Trixie three times last night and it failed at grub. Then I did same thing with Ubuntu server 24 and it also failed at grub but I accidentally ended up with Ubuntu server because that was the OS I didn’t overwrite with the bios flasher and I was tired by then. Too late now.

Oh no.... i installed Trixie a few times as well, no grub issues using EUFI. Ran into issues with installing nvidia drivers and hosed myself with unsigned kernel modules stopping boot.....forgot to set a root password BEFORE breaking things, locked out of recovery mode, starting over was easier than rescue mode from iso.

A couple days in now and so far so good with Plasma wayland is a non issue.

My new kernel issue had something to do with NVME behavior. Asus had a firmware fix thankfully.
Windows has some poor excuses with this W11 compatibility thing but it’s not like hardware issues don’t exist elsewhere.
I don’t know much about the W11“processor list” Does that mean a broadwell Xeon can be upgraded to TPM2 and still be denied updates? Only a couple CPU would be in this “grey” area if true. The really confusing part was MS citing spectre/meltdown while simultaneously supporting a hundred affected CPUs.

I installed Trixie on an Intel NUC 8 - Pentium j5005 CPU, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD.

I did a minimal install of the KDE Plasma desktop. No issues, it's smooth.

I've installed Chrome OS Flex on a few mini PC's. I've only had one problem with the power policy not working properly.

It currently doesn't allow access to the Google Play store so you're restricted to the apps that it loads. However, you can enable dev mode which will load Debian on it which then allows you to run Linux based apps.

I think you might be surprised how quickly they would adapt to the change.... but you MUST have a seasoned Linux desktop sysadmin type on hand who can hold their hands for the first week or two... after that should be smooth sailing.

Cool. I may look into it down the road , but I already bit the bullet and upgraded to WIN 11 compatible.

Id been kicking around going to Linux and yall have talked me into doing it. Will try Mint today.

How do I keep my personal information from being stolen by a fat polish gangster living in Uganda who arranges kidney thefts?

I'm computer retarded, is this safe for me to do?
