Offering two sonos ones for $349. Lol at the lack of multi room audio

quote:

Sonos One sounds incredible on its own, but the ability to have a stereo pair or have music in two rooms vs. one at $349 US feels like it's an easy choice for those who truly love music," said Joy Howard, chief marketing officer at Sonos. "We believe in freedom of choice and don't want to lock people into a specific ecosystem – it's why we support more than 80 streaming services globally and will take an agnostic approach to voice assistants as well.

they may not want to poke the bear..while sonos enjoys a healthy lead on all-comers, someone is going to give them a run for their money at some point.

apple has made it clear they are heavily invested in their music products.

I like Sonos and have it in damn near every room of my house but agree with CAD. Sonos is a small company compared to Apple and Amazon, etc. May not want to piss off the sleeping giants.

I love Apple products in general, but HomePod I just don't get. I have Google Assistant on my phone. I have Siri on my phone. I have Alexa in multiple rooms in my house. I have Sonos.

WTF do I need HomePod for? What does it accomplish?

It's the equivalent of Alexa but it's insanely priced. If they sold that for $150 or so, I'd be game but $349 when I already have Sonos and Alexa?! Nope.

You don't, but Apple has played up the "We don't sell your data" angle pretty well so for the people that want the functionality of Alexa without as much creepiness, they may pay the premium for the Homepod. That may not be the mass market, but Apple is ok with it's niche products being niche.

You personally don't need it. The same way i personally have no use for Google Home max.

They're pretty niche products.

while i was still teetering on the sonos fence (only had a couple of speakers) i briefly considered this as an up-and-comer for the play:5 and the more i read the more i realized that at almost the same price (300 vs 400 i think) you were getting another google 'throw everything at the wall and see what sticks' so after the initial release hoopla i x-ed it out on my list.

Well they don't exactly play nice with control systems

eh, not really. Alexa is better than Siri at most things. This thing is a music player first. Sound quality is supposed to be top notch. Do you know how expensive high end audio gear is? The HomePod is cheap compared to the rest of the audio market.

will look forward to the reviews of homepad v sonos with great interest.

i'm gonna lay a ban bet now that the 'sonos:1 stereo pair" they are selling for $349 will blow away this apple blockhead at the same price point.

That's great. Still doesn't play nice with some control systems

No way the apple will sound better than Sonos IMO.

This is perfect for me. I have been meaning to start integrating some Alexa items, and I have also wanted to up my Sonos setup.

Also Sonos:1 is voice control ecosystem agnostic.. At least that's how Sonos is billing it

I'll be sad to see you go CAD.

from a Refinery29 review:

quote:

Fortunately, HomePod also delivers where it counts: The sound. When I listened to the speaker next to Google Home Max, the latest Amazon Echo, and Sonos One, the vocals were consistently crisper and clearer on HomePod. The pluck of guitar strings pops, and bass notes have the robust thump-thump you want from them.

That review is comparing 1 sonos one vs a HomePod. $199 vs $349.

This sale is for 2 sonos ones for $349.....Which will curb stomp the HomePod.

If one speaker doesn’t sound as good as another, then 2 speakers isn’t going to make it sound better, even if it is stereo. Here are a few more reviews:

Digital Trends:

quote:

Audio quality is beautifully warm, yet the bass is not overpowering, even though it was still quite rich. If you close your eyes, it’s easy to feel like you’re at a live performance. We could pick out the vocals and instruments clearly. The speaker allows each instrument to shine through; you can hear precise guitar plucks. No, it doesn’t have that crisp sound you’d hear from very expensive high-end speakers, but then again, the HomePod doesn’t cost thousands yet still pushes brilliant sound quality out of a single, small enclosure.

What’s more impressive is how consistent the HomePod sounds wherever you are in the room. Yes, the further away you are, the quieter it is, but not by much. It almost felt like the music was following our movement, and it consistently sounded great.

Lance Ulanoff:

quote:

Recently, though, I heard Apple’s HomePod again in a variety of scenarios and spaces. It sounded even better, especially when compared to larger Google Home Max and the aurally excellent Sonos One, the HomePod’s separation of sounds and fidelity to original instrumentation is astonishing.

Mashable:

quote:

OK, yes, the HomePod sounds great. After spending a good chunk of the afternoon with Apple's new Siri-controlled speaker, listening to tunes in the company's tiny Tribeca apartment meeting space, I'm more convinced than ever that Apple has built an aural triumph in its initial entry to the "smart speaker" space.
