Someone finally compares stereo paired Sonos Play 1 speakers to homepod

Results are not surprising
Sonos and homepod face off
quote:
So which one should you buy for sheer sound quality? At the current time, it's pretty simple: buying two Sonos One speakers will give you even better sound than a single HomePod. Stereo brings the best music listening experience overall, and the One's balanced sound benefits from Sonos' long history in making Wi-Fi speakers.
As good as it sounds for a single speaker, a month after its debut it looks like Apple is still working out the HomePod's kinks. If you want a kitchen or "pottering around" speaker, the HomePod might be more suited due to its omnidirectional nature, but even buying a single Sonos One gives you 80 percent of the sound for about half the cost.

That noted authority on Audio--Cnet-- concludes--wait for it:
2 speakers are better than one...

On top of two sonos 1s being superior listening devices........Siri is dogshit.

Comparing wifi streaming speakers in sound quality is like comparing the Camry vs Accord in the 1/4. People buy these for features and convenience. Apple clearly has a leg up with their ecosystem.

If you call only being able to use Apple Music a feature, then yes.

Dumbest thing I've ever heard you say on here.
I'll perma ban myself when Apple releases a Connect and wireless surround system or can do at least 1% of what Sonos can do.

Sometimes apples first release of products, just doesn't have all that much functionality for the price and I can't seem to bring myself to purchase it.
The homepod seems to be the biggest offender in recent history. I just can't find a way to even remotely justify the purchase.

If all anyone cared about was features and convenience there's echo dots and google home minis out there for <$50. Obviously, there's a market for bigger/better sounding models which people use to play music through.

LMFAO WHAT?

So I can't pull open Amazon Music on my iPhone, or Spotify, or anything other than Apple Music and stream via Bluetooth or WiFi? The Homepod can't connect to a Dot and act as a streaming speaker via Bluetooth or WiFi?

You can play any service that is compatible with Airplay.

Can I connect to the Homepod using Bluetooth?
ETA: You can't...Which is ridiculous...I mean hell, I own two iPhone 8's and two iPad Mini's and have owned iPad's and been iPhone all the way since my iPhone 3G. Owned a 3GS, 4, 5, 5S, 6, and now an 8...But $350+tax for a speaker that doesn't have Bluetooth Connectivity?
Between that price and that glaring lack of basic, core functionality...the HomePod will either:
1.) Quickly be updated with a subsequent generation that has Bluetooth.
2.) Go the way of Google Glass.

why in the hell would you do this with a wifi speaker? that's a design flaw if you cant play all the music on your phone, local server, streaming service, etc via the speaker's core software.
wouldn't you agree?

You lost me. Why not just use Airplay?

does it allow you to 'cast' any sound source from your phone or are you limited by whether or not the app supports airplay?
can you use voice to control airplay on the homepad when its not apple music? "next track", "previous track", etc?

I think it can only work through Airplay unless you have Apple Music.

Good question. Don't know, all I've tried is Apple Music. Might play around with it tonight and see.

It can't. The same article I confirmed that was where I confirmed that Siri commands aren't available on anything other than Apple Music.
ETA: Here's the crazy part...It's got BT connectivity built in.

but does it have BT 'hands free' built in or is the BT there for adding other devices (remotes? etc) down the road?

Why do you need this over Airplay?

One is WiFi dependent. One is point-to-point.
One is iOS dependent. One is entirely platform agnostic.
So if I don't have a consistent WiFi connection-or one at all-or I have any device other than an iOS one, I'm f*cked from using a HomePod.
For $350 that's ridiculous. Period.

Well if you don't have a consistent WIFi connection and you're stuck with Bluetooth you're fricked anyway...
Apple doesn't care about you if you're not using their products. I think that;s been pretty well demonstrated in the past.

It's a bit pricey no doubt. It works great with Apple Music & it sounds really good. But the price made me hesitate. I figured I'd try it out and could always decide during the return period.
