I see on Bestbuy.com that there is only one 3D tv being sold.
I guess it's not worth buying.

Same with 4K for now. You need a receiver that supports it. They arent free and you will have to rent them. Netflix only thing right now with 4K content you can watch. Cable companies havent caught up yet. 4K is your next gimmick. Then HDR.

I thought the same thing about 4K ~6 months back, but the PS4 Pro supposedly being capable of 4K changes things.

OLED is the feature to go after, though. And I'll be happy with my $350, 55" LG 1080 TV for another ~5 years or so. As you said, the lack of content has diminishing returns going for the "fancy" features, plus you either need to sit REALLY close to the TV or have a 65"+ to be able to really notice.

Agreed. But the normal consumer isnt buying a PS4 to game for 4K. Unless Vue helps with it. Take your time when purchasing because by the time 4k truly comes around (if ever mainstream), the technology will be behind. Go with a larger smart tv screen without 4k for the same price plus you are likely to get a true 120. Most of the "sale" 4k tvs are true 60 hz. I dont even prefer smart tvs because of the lack of apps they have).

+1 on the OLED. Those are incredible.

Yarp. When I needed a TV upgrade, I skipped the OLED on account of 4K being legit in 3-5 years. I really liked it, but I much preferred to go with the cheap, big 1080 TV for a while before going all out.

Curved TV's are a bust (though I get curved monitors). 3D TV is a bust. Resolution has diminishing returns (the difference between 1080 to 4K isn't shite compared to 480 to 1080). I don't really see how much further the picture quality can advance beyond 4K/OLED, and those will be very reasonably priced within a few years.

I really don't know where TV/movie watching has to go beyond that aside from gimmicky bullshite. 4K/OLED type front projectors that can function well in moderate daylight would be badass, but that's such a niche market.

And 4k isn't in the same boat as 3D as far as being a gimmick.

You're right, 4K isn't a gimmick. But it's not terribly useful right now given the content. And sub 55" 4K TV's pretty much are a gimmick, unless you sit ~5' away from your TV.

Probably the most ignorant thing I have read on this board in quite some time.

Netflix is about the only thing I watch. So 4K may be a winner for me.

It's really odd because I love my 3D tv. The effects are way better than the movie theaters

The content isn't there yet, but you'll find that stores right now have a much larger inventory of 4K TV's than 1080p TV's. It's going to be the thing moving forward whether content catches up soon or not.

There's no 4K TV broadcasting and there won't be for some time. It's too expensive. I think some isolated events like the superbowl are though.

This thread is full of ignorance.

But to answer the OP yes. 3D was a gimmick that is dead.

Sports and porn are always the leading edge of TV technology. ABC/CBS/NBC don't want to put out the capital to upgrade regular shows to the latest until forced to.

I did the NBC tour in New York shortly before the FCC required the switch to digital. The tour guide commented about all of the upgrayddes (Idiocracy reference) they had to do because of the increase in picture quality. In the old days they would just use electrical tape on the edges of the set, but that wouldn't fly in HD.
