Apple is doing that for no other reason than to force more companies to pay the royalties for use of the lightning connector.

Congrats. You're capable of trolling the tech board. You knew what he was talking about. If not. You stupid.

Don't see this as a big issue. I am much more concerned with being about to swap out the battery and add more storage which is why I am currently using and LG G4.

I'll be interested to see how they handle this. If there is no ability to charge while listening to audio, that could be a major issue for people.

As for the compatibility with older headphones, it appears that an adapter will potentially be included with each phone.

Thought wireless charging was rumored. Would still require the phone to be stationary, though, and the purchase of another accessory.

The fact that only a handful of people laughed or clapped shows that while this is funny a bunch view it as a childish little brother obsession that Samsung has for Apple.

Well, there's rumors out there that Apple may include wireless charging with the 7. That would certainly make up for the lack of an audio port.

I bought my first pair of Bluetooth, over-the-ear headphones when they were a novelty act just about on Woot.com in 2007 or 2008 I think it was.

They used a dongle plugged into the aux jack on my laptop/mp3 player. Used the sh!t out of them at the gym.

With BT dongles, the tech's been around to convert any wired headphones to BT using a simple plug for <$15 for the better part of a decade is what I'm getting at. You can get cheap BT headphones that don't even need a dongle for less than half of that price.

I get that there are some audiophiles out there who are not happy that they'll have to plug into a dongle or lose the functionality. Are those audiophiles using those headphones with their iOS device most of the time anyway? I'm genuinely curious because while I value audio quality it's not something that's compelled me to spend hundreds of dollars on a single item to attain it.

But for those that have, aren't they already losing out on the quality of sound from the way that wireless audio is streamed by almost every service outside of perhaps Tidal, which has little market share to boast of anyway?

My guess is that with so many millions of people having already converted to BT headphones (and owning multiple pairs) this isn't really as big of a deal as some folks are making it out to be.

I use my audiophile-esque headphones with my phone all the time. Literally for an hour at least every day

Thanks for the link. I was a bit worried this would lead to BlueTooth headphones as the defacto standard and that would suck because charging. But advanced features like active noise cancelling will make this like when they killed the floppy disk.

ETA: What's the reasoning behind it? Sturdier connection? More space for battery? Better audio quality?

Neither. To make the phone thinner.

Because thats what we want. A Thinner phone thats even less robust and more prone to damage from everyday use.

Meanwhile, Lil Wayne is pouring champagne on his Galaxy.

I've been an iPhone user since 3. But dammit, I would love to have a phone that I didn't have to spend $100 on cases and screen protectors to make it last for two freakin years.

Uh, bluetooth headphones cost around $10-$20 for a decent pair and as low as $5 for a cheap pair.

Not really that difficult

Uh, you've got to charge up bluetooth headphones regularly.
Wired headphones always ready. Speaking of not that difficult.
