I've read Rocku is the better device.
Chromecast is less expensive. Fire-stick by kindle is comparable to Chromecast.
Do you have a gaming system? Playstion has most streaming apps available.

Spend a few bucks more and get the Roku 3 or the Amazon Fire TV. You won't be sorry.

I hear the Roku3 is the best.

I have apple tv and love it. The gf has chromecast and it gets the job done, but I wouldn't be satisfied with it.

Not really. Chromecast operates completely different from the other streaming sticks/boxes on the market. You have to use your phone, tablet, or PC as the remote. You search for, select, and play content from your phone, and then casting it to your Chromecast offloads the work to the Chromecast, which uses its own wifi connection to stream the content (in compatible apps, that is. If you just mirror your phone screen or a Chrome browser tab, your PC/phone/etc. does the work).
Personally, I love being able to find and select content using my phone or PC's interface. My main complaint is that it doesn't properly support Amazon instant video, but I use netflix or plex 90% of the time. Others may prefer all of the native apps being on the streaming device itself with no need for a secondary device to pull up content.

I have a PS4, but I left it with the wife for her viewing pleasure. Plus I am in a school and the PS4 may have distracted too much from my studies. The main things I want it for is WatchESPN Netflix, and Amazon Prime App.

Chromecast doesn't support Amazon Instant. Roku does.
Unless you're planning to cast from your laptop, get the Roku Stick.

I've got a Roku so it's all I know.No complaints.I paid $49.99.
eta: I have Netflix and Hula.I use my Sister's Amazon Prime account.
It has all the ESPN channels. Also has YouTube which I've found has a better selection than Netflix.

You'll have to avoid chromecast. For roughly the same price you can get a roku stick/LT or a fire tv stick. For close to $100 you can get a roku3 or fireTV.

I have all the streaming devices and the one I recommend to everyone is the Amazon Fire TV or the Amazon Fire TV stick.
It does everything that all the other devices do plus it allows you to install Kodi without having to root the device.
Kodi alone makes the Fire TV devices superior to all the other ones.

Roku3 is the best option out there right now.
