What do you all use and what do you find are ones that are good and ones to steer clear from? Looking for something that ideally has both VPN and password manager
Thanks baws

I use Mullvad for VPN. Stay away from free vpns and Private Internet Access
For passwords, I use bitwarden and you can even host it locally if you want. Lastpass has had a couple recent breaches, so I wouldn't recommend them.

Second BitWarden. I switch to it from Lastpass maybe two years ago. Mobile app, automatic sync, browser plugins, good to go.

We just went with Passbolt. Really like it so far. Open source, very secure, and easy to self host.

Self hosting is not for newbies. Synchronization for laymen becomes a nightmare immediately. It's more secure, but if it's not usable for most people, it won't get used, therefore no bueno.

For password manager, I really like 1Password. I used to use LastPass, but 1Password is far more simplistic, and appears to be more secure.
For VPN, Surfshark.

I have this but my only issue is it gets blocked on the guest network at the site I work. Nord gets through so I use that out here.
Surfshark seems to have less impact on speed.

Curious as to why you say stay away?

I used PIA for many years as they were considered one of the best to protect their user privacy. When they got bought out by a shady ad company, many people left over privacy (and security) concerns.

1password
I don’t use a VPN. Eero Plus comes with 1Password and a Encrypt.me VPN. But I haven’t used the VPN yet.

Proton VPN is a legit free VPN service unless someone knows something bad about it I don't.

If you just want occasional VPN for source address obfuscation or firewall sidestepping, etc. Proton VPN free tier is excellent. Only one device, less selection of servers, no torrenting or streaming but that's about the only catches. If any of those are dealbreakers you can pay for an account, which you'd have to do with any other reputable VPN provider.
I'll also throw in a Bitwarden recommendation. It's not required to self host but is an option. It's open source and the Dev seems to be responsive to requests, feedback, etc. It's a good project and worth supporting. Free version probably would suit you if it's just you using. If you want to share passwords with family etc. Then you'll need a paid account or to self host.

I speak from personal experience. Free VPNs are consistently unreliable and subpar. I have extensively tested numerous free options, and they have always proven to be prone to crashing. Thus, it is preferable to invest a small amount of money in a reliable and trusted VPN service. There are numerous options available, and currently, I am using NordVPN. However, if it ever ceases to meet my requirements, I am open to switching to another service.

Express VPN -- mostly to prevent geoblocking. Works with everything I use.

Another vote for 1password.
