Present for genius child, computer coding

My wife teaches gifted boy, 8 years of age, that is writing computer code. As that is not on my wheelhouse, lol, what does the board think is an appropriate gift to challenge a young genius?

For context, why are we buying this kid a gift?

Shouldn't the kid buy a gift for his teacher at the end of the year?

What kinda budget are we talking about here?
A Raspberry Pi starter kit might be awesome for him.

So much can be done on a pi. He can learn python to control the I/o on the board or set up web apps/webserver. Pretty much learn and play around with any useful programming language.

Because she’s an awesome teacher. Next question.

That sounds amazing. Great idea.

The kids mom has bought amazing gifts for her. The situation warrants close contact with the whole family during the year she’s not in a traditional class setting. Anyway, the year is over and they are going to lunch and we want to get him something to challenge him over the summer. She’ll be tracking him for the next half year.

Good luck finding a new RPI for sale - the supply chain problems have affected them too... https://rpilocator.com/

Is he any good? Hell if he is I might be able to get him an unpaid intern spot as a gift
I kid...the Pi was a great suggestion.

He's a child and to see what he is able to do is astonishing. My wife plans on challenging him with a very advanced math curriculum next year.
Thanks for the input.

The RPI 400 is an RPI 4 with 4 GB RAM built into a keyboard.
It looks like there are RPI 400 kits available and still priced at $100:
https://www.raspberrypi.com/products/raspberry-pi-400/?variant=raspberry-pi-400-us-kit
There are links to resellers down the page. I've bought RPI's from Canakit and had no issues with them.

They put together great experiment/engineering labs for the Pi. I've found with my son that learning coding and such goes a LOT further when it can interact with the world. Tell the computer to tell XX to actually do YY.
Prices are high, even with the old Pi3's this kit actually runs about $350.

Sounds like he needs a soccer ball or a baseball glove.

yeah little nerd will probably get beat up in high school only to become their boss a decade later. kidding of course. Funny story i went back to college later in life and toke many programming classes. I struggled because i didnt grow up with computers. Every test the class usually did not fare well. So teacher would think a curve was in order. Well until little genius nerd would always break the curve with a perfect score. Insert your genius child here. I hated that kid probably 17 but just so happy with himself and everybody hating him

So maybe something that would involve teamwork wouldn't be so bad as a gift instead of more nerd gifts.

You'd have to be more specific. A lot of these "coding" programs in elementary schools is the visual stuff for minecraft, like this -> LINK
So you can't just buy them a python course and expect it all to work out, would need to know some math. Maybe the dude knows math and is already writing python, which would greatly change the recommendations.

Apple II terminal from the 1980s and a BASIC handbook. That's the coding I was doing at 8 years old. You have to code a little just to use it, so you kinda can't help yourself but sit there and frick around with code and make your own programs. I could have a blast on one right now.

Is he truly gifted or is he “we don’t know much about coding so he seems like a genius” gifted?
Posted on 5/22/22 at 9:52 pm to jmon
Yeah the pi’s are cool. That would be a cool programming present if he’s past something like Osmo.
I built my own trip computer/ mpg calculator for a vehicle that didn’t have on with an arduino one time which is basically the same thing. Took me a while because I am not a coding genius but it was a cool little challenge
Now I can’t even get my go pro out of h.265
