Is there any quality difference between streaming a 4k movie (from Netflix, streaming site, etc.) and a physical disc of the movie itself?

the disc will be much better quality, not compressed, or not as compressed as streaming. picture and sound quality will be greater

HUGE difference between running your own local streaming (Plex) vs Netflix/etal.

Plex (using directplay) can deliver 4K Blu-ray Rips that are native Blu-ray quality. Those sources would be called remuxs and they are 45-80gb for a 4K remux.

Physical 4K discs (aka UHD) require that the video include HDR which alot of people think is a more significant improvement over 4K. Some discs also have DolbyVision or HDR+ which is even better.

You need a TV that supports HDR but if you've bought within the last couple years it probably does.

With streaming content, it's not common to find HDR or DV yet.

A UHD 4k Blu-Ray disc is much better quality than a comparable stream. As mentioned before, the compression really decreases the quality on a stream. Someday this won't be the case, but if you're wondering if it is worth it to buy a 4k player, I would say go for it.

wut?

i have about 50 4K movies on my plex server and they are all HDR.

pretty sure amazon prime and youtube are HDR as well; i see the badge pop up on my TCL indicating its HDR when they begin streaming.

not sure about netflix as i don't have a netflix account.

Pretty much all of Netflix’s newer movies and popular shows are in HDR

And yea, idk what that person is talking about. There’s plenty of HDR selections to stream via Netflix, amazon, Vudu, etc

I have, for example, the streaming Vudo edition of Blade Runner and the 4k disc.

Watching the 4k disk is like watching a completely different movie as the sound, colors and blacks are so pure and immersively rich in detail that it's just a completely supreme movie in every way.

We need to invite each other to share Plex.

I’ll have to start doing this.

I am just now starting to dive deep into plex and get it up and running with my antenna. Between ripping 4K movies and recording the wife’s shows I need to upgrade my hard drive ASAP.

I had been using iTunes rentals with tuneskit but no 4K movies that way.

There's no comparison, especially in terms of audio. No streaming site does TrueHD and/or DTS-HD. If you have a good surround sound system and enjoy an immersive audio experience, physical discs are still the way to go.

I can't speak for netflix but amazon UHD shows are typically in HDR, also.

And where did those movies come from? Ripped from a 4K UHD disc... With all the streaming content out there today, only a very tiny fraction has HDR. 100% of all UHD discs have HDR.

So now you're selectively defining streaming?

I'm not faulting those who lack the skills to put their library online and still rely on plastic disks but it's stupid to say you have to keep a bunch of disks spilling off a bookshelf somewhere to get the same quality.

Just set up plex on my nvidia shield, nothing to share yet. Can you recommend where to go to just have some to start? Until can get some of my own to share. Username in plex is same as here.
