I'm looking to get my parents house outfitted with some. They have a nest doorbell and would like to be able to see the entire house. The obvious solution is getting nest cameras for the corners of the house. But is there anything I should be looking at as far as other setups go? Ive read that Lorex is a solid brand to checkout. I haven't decided on wired or wireless either. Any help would be appreciated.

Wyze for ease of installation (wireless. 3-6 mo battery) and really cheap comparatively. I'm on month 5 of having them installed and I find they work just fine.

man, I came to the tech board to inquire about the same topic! Im looking at a Ring doorbell and also a Ring Motion Light. I just need two areas covered (front door and carport) and the ease of the Ring system is what has me leaning that way.

Ill be checking back for others input.

Wyze

My problem with Wyze and other cheap cams is if I walk in front of it 10 times, it only detects me about 5 times.

There are a lot of variables that play into the best solution for someone. I'm all about reducing the number of apps I use. I had a ring doorbell and ring alarm so I added ring cameras. There are downsides such as losing my internet connection results in no recordings b/c it's all cloud-based. My previous solution was the opposite. All recordings were local and I controlled them. However, if my home burned, I'd lose the recordings. A thief could have steal my hard drive and I wouldn't have been able to see him do it.

Yeah that's going to be an issue with any camera that is battery powered or that records to the cloud only. I would not call it a security camera unless it records 24/7.

Whats your setup if you don't mind me asking. I'm looking at 4 spotlight cameras and 2 regular cameras.

Without the premium storage, there's a dead period of 5 minutes on the outdoor cameras. I've had no issues that I'm aware of to this point.

The CamPlus subscription removes cooldown like poster above says when not using SD card.

I have a Swann 8 camera Security system with wired cameras. I wanted the wired cameras so I didn't have to worry about the batteries running out (probably should consider this since it isn't your house). I upgraded the internal storage and have the 3 cameras pointing at my doors on 24/7 record and the other 5 cameras on motion activated (don't need 24/7 recording of the side of my house).

I really like the system, but not crazy about the night vision. Had 3 areas with minimal lighting, so the cameras wouldn't pick up motion. Had to add some solar lights down the fence lines to give enough light for them to find motion.

The app is very easy to use if you just need to pull up the cameras to see what's going on. Has about a 2-3 second delay. The app can get a little tricky if you want to see past recordings, but the system is very easy to use for this if plugged into a monitor or TV.

I will be doing a full reno gut on my home and adding lights and cameras to the outside of my home. While everything is open I am thinking it will be best to hardwire all of my cameras. Does wyze have a hardwire option and is hardwire the best? I don't want to be out there chanign batteries every 3-6 months.

Definitely run cable when the walls are open. With cable installed, your camera options are wide open and you should forget about wyze/nest/ring/etc. Get some decent PoE cameras and NVR and get good quality 24/7 video with all the same notifications and remote access but without the monthly fees or worrying about batteries or flaky wifi or internet outages.

I have Arlo cameras on my house. I'm satisfied. Max 5 camera then have to pay cloud fees for saving of videos. Downside is that if internet goes down so does camera system.

Do you have a brand or setup you recommend? I assume I need to run power and Cat5/6 or whatever to each location as well? Im price-conscious but don't want cheap pieces of shite.

The thing about security camera brands is that most of them are just that... a brand. I am really small potatoes and even I sell cameras and NVRs with my own company logo branded on them. I mostly sell Uniview, which is the #3 OEM out of China (the top 2 being Hikvision and Dahua). Almost every budget camera brand that you will find is just a white label Hik/Dahua/Uniview or maybe RaySharp. Some of the bigger brands have their own mostly custom firmware, but it's all the same hardware. I've been sticking with Uniview because they have NDAA-compliant chips and have not felt the wrath of the US government yet.

A lot of people like Reolink, but my personal experience with them is they are kind of trash.

If you go outside of China there are of course more OEMs, but the prices are obviously higher and few want to pay that much.

Yeah that's pretty typical.

I can't tell you how much money to spend, but I will tell you that there is a significant difference in video quality (particularly at night) between the bargain bin cameras (and I put wifi cloud cameras in this category regardless of price) and something with a bit more quality.

PoE stands for power-over-ethernet, which means these cameras only need cat5/6. They get their power and send data over the one cable. Obviously if you are also adding lights then you will need 110v at those locations as well.
