New UK law makes Kodi streaming worth up to 10 years in jail

The Digital Economy Act has passed into law, meaning people could now face ten-year prison sentences for illegally streaming copyrighted content.
...However, the new law will most likely target individuals and groups making a business out of selling illegal content, FACT CEO Kieron Sharp told the Mirror.
...Authorities and broadcasters are becoming increasingly concerned about media players loaded with Kodi and a variety of third-party add-ons that provide free access to copyrighted content.
Police Scotland recently claimed that “criminal gangs” have started selling media players pre-loaded with Kodi and a variety of third-party add-ons, because they see it as a less risky area of crime.
The fact that criminals and gangs are the ones selling Kodi boxes should have been your first clue that you're doing it wrong across the pond.
The article also threw in this nugget:

Amazon and the Premier League are also cracking down on illegal streams fed to media players running Kodi.

Lets hope Kodi can force business changes like Napster did before it gets killed.

I was told this is impossible because kodi can't be cracked down upon and what people are doing with it isn't "really" illegal.

It wasn't illegal, or it was a gray area, until this new law.

Kodi isn't illegal, its the addons that stream copyrighted content that are. And going after individuals at home isn't the purpose of this new law. They want to stop the stream hosts and businesses such as pubs that stream soccer games illegally. That's not to say they may not prosecute an individual to scare other people from using the streams.

It still not illegal is you load kodi and the add ones yourself
They could put an end to this is they actually showed 3pm soccer games on tv. Pubs could legally show them.

Then they should adapt with the times.
Kodi is exactly what cable TV should be today. Just give us access to all the content whenever we want it. You can still put ads and shite but there's no fricking reason that in 2017 if I can't be home at 8:30 on a Wednesday then I just can't watch the show I want.
And why not put movies out on regular TV? Release the movie in the theater and then the next week release it for pay on TV. I'd happily pay for th content, but it isn't even offered to me.
What the cable and network providers are doing right now is the same shite blockbuster did when Netflix came out and cab companies did when Uber came out.
Look at what your competitors are doing correct and emulate it or die.

My 11 year old had friends over for about a half day. I was working in the yard as parents came to pick them up. One of the parents asked me, "Did the kids really watch 'Boss Baby' at your house, today!" Well, that's a current run movie at the theater, so I just commented that I didn't have any idea what the kids did. Talked to my son. He'd downloaded Kodi onto his FireTV stick on his Xbox One. Had him show me. No adult channels, but he had Exodus and Phoenix on there.

I agree, kodi exodus is how cable should work.
I have cable but outside of sports we watch Kodi 80% of the time.
Right now I'm watching Fresh Off The Boat Season 2 with the kids.
Would not be possible with cable alone, but it should be. I would be willing to watch commercials but I should be able to watch shows I already paid for when I want to watch them.
For example on the AMC app Better Call Saul episodes are only available to be streamed for 24 days.
I pay for AMC and Better Call Saul I should be able to watch when I want.

But if you could stream it anytime you wanted from AMC then NetFlix wouldn't have any reason to pay for it which they currently do. Why doesn't AMC just make money off the reruns themselves you ask? The way advertising is currently sold they make money off of bulk ad buys, that's why even with DVRs they only count things like "Live + 3 days". They obviously aren't able to monetize the reruns as well as NetFlix can or they would do it themselves. Not to mention there's the added benefit of growing the audience for a show by making it accessible on NetFlix.
Unfortunately it's not a black and white issue with easy answers. If there were a single service that gave you access to everything ever made it'd have to cost a lot more than the current cable streaming services.

I pay for PS Vue, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. If you can't bring me your content among those 3 I am going to watch it on Kodi. People are perfectly willing to pay for content as long as they make it readily available at a decent price, but some of them had a stranglehold on content for far too long. Prices got ridiculous and now the consumer is saying they will no longer play that game. It is time for them to adapt to the times or get beat out by those that do.

If the movie and tv industry would make their own version of Netflix/Kodi and put all their content on there in high quality audio and video they could make a fortune.
They could wait 6 weeks for new movie to get theater run time. I would easily pay 100 a month for that service and drop everything else. They could then pay the content maker based off of views.
Instead they would rather you pay for the movie ticket, dvd, and then get their cut of your cable subscription all for the same movie. They call that an intellectual copyright, but in reality it's just a shitty way to treat your customers and they are now feeling the backlash.
