Ceiling speakers are garbage. May as well just not have music. Unless, of course, you lay on the floor to listen to them.

Quite possibly the dumbest thing I have ever read here

How is your system tied to Sonos? A connect? Do you need one for each zone?

i use a denon dual zone receiver and connect. i use my second zone to connect to all of the hard wired speakers throughout the house. zone 1 is for our main tv viewing area.

So tell me how damn near every audiophile on the plant that has their tweeters, and midrange, at listening height and pointed at them is wrong? They should just hang their fricking speakers from the ceiling pointed at the ground with no regard to positioning or soundstage or anything...it just doesn't matter.

You should read the OP again I don't think you understand the topic of discussion.

I understand what's going on, and I understand that TONS of people hard wire ceiling speakers into new construction, and I understand that shops love selling this stuff, and I have friends with this exact setup that they've paid handsomely for...and to be honest it's louder than I imaged it would be, but still...if my wife insisted I hid everything I'd figure out a way to at least put a near field system in my office so I could hear music like I want. I kept the WAF in mind when I bought my system and she's never once complained.

I'd do Sonos before I'd hide speakers overhead, but luckily I don't have either problem.

OP do sonos. I have them all hard wired in a closet to ceiling speakers. I have some paybars and subs...and i have a playbar/sub/connect amp with ceiling speakers for a 5.1 in my bedroom. I AV setup with a regular connect. Its so easy to run it all. I am a fanboy

I bet you have a audiophile set up with a listening chair in every room of your house. In the bathroom is it set up so the sweet spot is sitting on the toilet or laying in the tub ? What about the kitchen ? What about in the garage or back yard ? Do you have a little mobile set up that you snap yourself into so no matter if you are working or relaxing you have the speakers at the perfect listening angle ? What about when you have guest over to watch a game or have a house party. Does everyone just sit in your lap so they can be in the perfect location ? What system do you have in your cars ? Who built it ? I bet it sounds amazing. Do you drag your audiophile gear out to the beach for beach trips ? Do you own a boat ? How does your gear like the saltwater ?

I have two speakers in my house, and if I want to hear them in the bathroom I turn my hybrid tube amp up.

The only speakers that should be in the ceiling are subs...preferably in a X.2 setup. I've seen directional ceiling rears used in a system, but it was a $30k setup and didn't think it sounded particularly well.

Or hell put them all up there and feed them surround sound and rock out with your strange sounding shite. People like dumb shite, I don't even care.

It really is the best option now days unless you are real picky about shite. I don't know why I got downvoted so much.

Ceiling speakers might not be ideal compared to wall speakers but they're fine. I was worried about doing it but i did and they work really well.

Your comment of "you might as well not have speakers at all" if they're ceiling speakers is very off base.

You pussies calm down. I'm putting them in the walls where possible. It's an open concept house so my rears are going to be in the ceiling because I have no rear walls in my living room because it's the kitchen. Sonos it is. Thanks for all the help. From a price standpoint, it seems like the play 1, 3 or 5 is cheaper than getting a connect and hardwiring the speakers. Am I looking at this correctly?

That's the route I would go. Hardwire some architectural speakers and run them back to one location. I'd use connect amps in the rooms you just want music. If you want a 5.1 system I'd buy a traditional AVR and put a SONOS connect on it to make it a SONOS zone. You could also use a playbar a couple of play1's and a sub for 5.1 sound. But I'd rather have an AVR to handle the video switching.

This is the correct answer. As I have said before in regards to Sonos, check out ebay for the older versions of the Connect and Connect Amp. ZP-80/90 and ZP-100/120.

I like the Play 1/3/5 for rooms that you may listen to music in periodically. That would be your preference, but something like a Nursery or Office would be a good place for a Play 1.

I have a Play 1 in my kitchen right now, but it is only because we were planning on doing some renovations. I didn't see the need in putting a 5.1 system in the living room ceiling and another 2 channels in the Kitchen when those speakers would be overkill if that dividing wall comes down.

If you want to do it right and aren't concerned with the 2 channel stuff like Gaston loves (no offense, I have two channel for my turntable), then go with Sonos.

I use an AppleTV for my interface and an Airport Express as the front end. The Express has an optical out that I run to an external DAC then to my integrated. It pulls my music bit correct (16bit 44.1kHz) but it also acts as a 'speaker' on Apple TV, so it can send any signal to my 2 channel rig. Anyone on my network can see both, so anyone can play videos to the TV or music to my stereo from their phone. The options are unlimited, but the interface to my 1Tb of CD quality music is badass, and it sounds amazing. I've never seen the Sonos interface, but I have a hard time believing outside of the zone feature, and you could do that easily with other 'speakers', it can keep up with Apple.

For me I prefer the connect amp and speaker. The only experience I have is with a play 1 that is in my daughters bedroom for her alarm clock and music in there. The sound bar sounds good but it really shines with the sub.

Since SONOS is so damn popular right now all of the control system, smart hubs etc all are trying to integrate with it. It's like when smart phones first came out and Apple would get the apps before droid. The Lutron pico remote is a cool accessory.

Better go buy a back up express while they are still available.

I could go optical out of the TV to the DAC, it just wouldn't stay native bit rate. Right now if I'm just going to listen to an album I leave the TV off and just go computer to express.

My wife listens to Spotify from her phone directly to the express...

Great idea though, those things are too cheap not to pick another one up.

How easy is it to connect multiple things to a 5.1 Sonos system? Like tv/Xbox and maybe something else ?

Assuming g I get the sound bar sub and a set of play 1s...could I detach a single play one and use outside if we are entertaining that day and have audio in house and a different audio on the single play one I took outside ?
