Yay or nay?

Just moved into a new house and want to get a couple but I'm a little hesitant on spending three money.

They are also $50 off until the 4th.

Everybody on here loves the ecobee. I have the latest gen nest thermostat and camera and have no issues and like them both. I have no way to compare to ecobee though.

I chose the Ecobee3 because of the remote sensors that monitor the temperature in remote bedrooms to ensure they stay comfortable.

Nest has the fancy name but is not the best thermostat on the market.

But I've had an issue with installing the ecobee to my system. May try nest. What am I really missing other than the sensors?

Nest uses my phones GPS to know if I am home, so it doesn't go into "Away Mode" if I am in another room for a long time.

what's the latest. Your HVAC guy couldn't sort it out?

I've installed those Honeywells on some crazy systems and never gotten stuck. Maybe the ecobee doesn't support as many systems/configurations.

Yea, it was weird. I got an ecobee3 from my local HomeDepot. I tried to install it and use the blue wire for the "C" wire or whatnot. Turned it on and it just made clicking noises and never displayed anything on the screen (with all the other wires wired correctly, of course).

My HVAC guy came over the next day and come to find out that the blue wire/C wire wasn't actually connected to anything in the attic. So he connected it and we tried to boot up and it started to get to the little "We're loading your ecobee3 up..." type splash screen but then would do that for 15 seconds and then reboot and rinse and repeat over and over.

He then ran a voltage test on it and it was getting a steady voltage of whatever it needed.

So I had to return it back to home depot and just got a refund. My C wire is still plugged in though so maybe I just got a bad one?

maybe you screwed it up the first time

try another ecobee now that you know how it should be wired. if it still doesn't work, it probably isn't compatible. i don't see how a nest would be where an ecobee wasn't, though.

ecobee also wouldn't work on my system, and Honeywell and Nest work just fine. Too be honest with you, unless you have smart vents the whole "having sensors for different rooms" is a massive gimmick, there is really no reason for it, and the nest is going to figure out what temp is needs to be in your main room, when you go to sleep, you don't have to have the 100% accurate data for the exact room you are sleeping in, it's a wash.

I would also say now that the problem at Nest is gone, that right now is probably the best time to get in on the Nest... multiple updates, and even a price cut in the last month since Fadell left, frick that guy, I think even my cameras have gotten a few updates in the last month.

I say yay. I have 3 Nests in my house and a cheap Honeywell in our condo. The Nests are smarter and actually learn your habits. They are brainlessly easy to install (just make sure you connect your blue C wire in the attic to avoid any issues).

The cheap Honeywell does the trick if all you need is the ability to operate it remotely. I had to contact Honeywell tech support a couple times to get it to work, but no problems at all with it.

I would try a second ecobee before giving up just in case the c wire issue inadvertantly Messer something up.

It doesn't seem like your configuration should have problems.

And yes.. In 99% of cases if your c wire is wrapped around the wire sheeting at the thermostat and not in use its likely not connected at the other end either.
