Need Tech Help finding RAM upgrade for a Dell laptop.
Long story short. Bought an "inexpensive"* ($275) Dell laptop on Black Friday sales of 2017 that was always "slow" . Didn't use it much because it was a spare and it was always slower than other computers I own.

I finally sent it back to Dell under warranty last month to see what could be done. They apparently changed the hard drive and re-imaged the machine but it was still slow when it came back.

When I contacted Dell again the Indian call center dude basically said it didn't have enough ram and since it is now out of warranty they wanted $129 to diagnose whether it was a software or hardware problem.

Can someone help me by pointing me to a cheap cheap RAM upgrade to to see if it will help speed the laptop up?.

Read this link about RAM Upgrade on this Dell

When working ok'd old computers I usually let Crucial scan and tell me which type I need for the device then shop for the ram on newegg.com.

Before doing anything else go to Start -> Run -> msinfo32

Find the motherboard/baseboard manufacturer and model then research it to see if it can handle more than 4GB RAM. It might take you a few minutes extra but it's better to take the extra time doing that than ending up adding more RAM than a system can handle.

370-AACZ : 4GB Single Channel DDR3L 1600M Hz (4GBx1)

What I got from your build sheet for ram.

400-ABCT : 500GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive

might look into upgrading this to a SSD as well for "speed"

You'd be much better off with a SSD upgrade. I have a bunch of 4gb and 8gb DDR3 sodimms if you want to check for compatibility if you're in the nola area

I second this. You'll shite yourself at the speed difference between that and a solid state drive.

Crucial System Scan

Would this be the SSD drive that would work. 250G is enough as we will only use this for surfing the web, some pics, music etc...

Crucial MX500 250GB 3D NAND SATA 2.5-inch 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal SSD

My research seems like it is maxed at 4GB unless you have the 500G standard drive which I do.

Can anyone confirm I could use on of the compatible RAM upgrades listed on the link above to get to 8GB? Seems like you would need a true 8gb as there is only one slot and would have to replace the existing 4gb with a new 8gb?

Get your motherboard make/model and see what it supports. I am not familiar with how crucial's scan determines(model based or otherwise).

If you saw that the above 500gb hard drive models support 8gb or higher then it could have a different motherboard or the same and they just downgrade the actual rating on your model.

For instance an old macbook pro of my wifes, Apple says it supports 8gb max, however you can load 16gb in and the board recognizes it.

You only have one slot, so you need an 8gb single for any upgrade.

However any 2.5 ssd should do and you will notice speed there for what you are probably doing. That is unless your speed issue is related to web browsing slowness, Which is unrelated to any of this. 250 gb SSDs should be good for you, if you need more just load files on external for storage

Any SSD will work. Like this one for $35

About the ram, like the post above, it's all based on the motherboard.

There's almost no reason to get mechanical drives anymore unless you absolutely need more than 1tb of space. 1tb SSDs are like $120 now

I remember (probably like 5 or 6 years ago) you would be considered lucky if you found an SSD for $1/gb

I like MemoryStock.com as much as Crucial for their scan tool. MemoryStock also has Live Chat with their staff available to re-verify even though they guarantee compatibility from the scan tool.

The link from "Thursday, November 30, 2017 7:26 AM" email of the scan result still works for me even.

MemoryStock says the 8Gb chip below will work in the Dell 15-3552 for $45 dollars. Seems like it it worth it so after i upgrade both the SSD and 8gb ram I will let you know if the machine has improved performance and allows us to use it daily.

8GB DDR3 PC3L-12800 204pin CL=11 DDR3-1600 1.35V SODIMM 8GB 2Rx8 DDR3-1600 S

I hate to tell you this but the magic word is Celeron. You can put an SSD and increase RAM, but with a Celeron CPU, it isn't going to make that much difference. Don't put any more money into that dog, you made a mistake, we all do, move on.

If you are inclined, put a 4GB stick of RAM in a USB port and install Ready Boost.

If I replace the HD with a SSD do I just replace it or is there some type of software trick needed to get it to boot back up? In other words will the Windows 10 system be OK if I simply switch out the drive?
