Need recs for a printer

Been a LONG time since I’ve owned a home printer. But my 10 year old is needing one more and more. The last one I used would not print in black only when there was a full black ink cartridge but one of the colors was low. Pissed me off. I need one that can print in grayscale if one or more of the colors is out. Don’t need anything super high end. Just something for school work. TIA

Get a color laser. I like Brother.

We have had 2 Brother laser printers over the years and both have been good reliable printers.
We use 3rd party toner cartridges in them that cost less and work well.

I have owned a lot of printers, over the last 37 years, and the Brother laser printers are by far the best value for your money.

The one I had last was a brother. Did they get rid of the stupid limitation where you can’t print at all if one of the color cartridges is empty?

Apparently, I'm behind the times...

This is a common thing with inkjets from most manufacturers. Ink is messy, it dries, clogs, etc. I think every inkjet I've had used more ink doing cleaning cycles than actually printing.
Get a laser.

I have the MFC-9340-CDW Laser, it is an older model, and I just went through this. My Yellow toner cartridge showed empty and it wouldn't print. I replaced that cartridge and then it told me the Magenta was empty, still wouldn't print. Replaced that and then I was told the Cyan was empty, so it still wouldn't print. I replaced that one and the printer works fine. Now those were old aftermarket cheap toner cartridges, but I got good service out of them. To answer your question my older model won't print if one cartridge is empty, or so it appears.

Not sure what model I have but I'm pretty sure it will print with an empty toner. You have to choose mono because otherwise I think the driver wants to use some color even when printing grayscale. Something about richer blacks.

You are right, it uses some of the yellow toner when printing black. This is according to my daughter, no pics, who works in IT like you.

I’m here with you, man. I love my Ecotank

If I ever get another inkjet it'll be an ecotank or similar. I just like the speed of a laser and that pages come out dry no matter how much is printed on the page.

For the win. Not only have I used less than 25% of the toner in over a year, it feeds envelopes properly #OMG. Remanufactured DCP-L2550DW.
