I asked a few people around the office if they had a thermometer. When I get back to my office, opened chrome, and went to Tigerdroppings, the side advertisement showed a thermometer for sale.

WTF? I have a google pixel phone. Did google assistant really listen to me and post an ad based on my conversation?

Of course they do. I see ads for stuff all the time that we've been talking about.

Same thing happened to me. Buddy last night showed me his Shinola watch and i had a Shinola ad on TD when i got home later that night.

I was skeptical, I'm a believer now.

You're crazy if you think they need those apps to listen in.

Have a shinola ad on the bottom of the page now. I've never even heard of that brand before.

I had a Shinola ad on the page before I clicked this thread. Internet is a time traveler.

I'm skeptical. Presumably you had it in your pocket, which prevents my iPhone from waking up to "Hey Siri," and the power drain of continuous speech recognition compared to merely listening for a single wake-up phrase would be prohibitive.

I had a weird one last week:

My brother and I were talking about an air freshener that he had in his room, still in the package.. it was one of the glade plug ins for your vehicle, and neither one of us mentioned it by name, nor said the words ‘air freshener’, yet the following day while scrolling through Instagram, there was an ad for the same exact one

WTF kinda shite is this?

Last week a girl is telling me about a service in New Orleans that does cascading balloon arrangements, etc.... Later that night, I see it advertised as I'm scrolling through Instagram. Crazy!

I kind of like targeted advertising. Maybe I'm alone...
