My company is throwing away a few older desktops that are still nice but they have upgraded. Is it possible to remove the work login domain at the windows start up and just use the basic functions of the computer for personal use?

Yep, this is all you need to do. You can always add some more memory, a new or additional hard drive(s) and a video card if it is worth your while.

How do I wipe the hard drive? I can’t get into windows because it’s password protected with an employee username and password.

Boot from USB (jump drive containing whatever OS image you want to install, assuming Windows in your case) the installation will ask you if you want to wipe the existing drive.

The bootable windows jump drive method did not work for me. What I had to do was create a bootable linux jump drive. I did that back in October to wipe the hard drive to get around the password protection. Google how to do that; there are many blogs/websites with good step by step instructions. I don't remember which one I used or any specifics or I would help you more. The main thing is know it can be done and it wasn't very hard.

I have used this program dban to wipe a hard drive. Its free and you can download it onto a flash drive. After that you will need Windows on a flash drive or disc to reinstall.

Why? You wipe the drive whenever you go through the windows installation

So I tried to download windows 10 but I keep getting an error message after about 50% download. It looks like it’s a firewall issue from my research but I may try the Linux system anyway and see how I like it.

Windows 10 Media Creation Tool

Follow that link. Click the download tool now. Run the downloaded program. It will guide you through the creation of a bootable USB flash drive from which you can install Windows 10.

Some of mine are too as once the company wipes them they seem to work fine.

That’s what I did but I keep getting an error saying the tool failed to download at around the 50% mark. According to forums on the error code, it seems like my antivirus may be causing the issue but I’m not home to redownload it right now

Reformat and reinstall. Usually it's built in.

Did you choose custom not recommended download settings?

If it's an old office desktop, I can practically guarantee that it's using spinning rust. Just go buy a new ssd and install windows on that. Now you don't have to worry about anything that was on there causing you issues.

did you first use Linux from a usb to access and erase the hard drive? After you do that, you should have no problem installing windows 10.

If that doesn't work, you can certainly use Linux os while you keep trying to get W10 on there.
