re: Is $1,000 for a phone that ridiculous?

I got a used motoplay z last year for $250 shipped no tax no activation fee. I added a 128gig micro SD. This phone does everything a $1000 can do that I care about. So yes $1000 is absurd to me.

To me this is the correct answer:
If you have certain needs and don't want to research your options or don't know better (like adding external memory), you will buy the $1,000 because you personally think it meets your needs and is worth that.
If you feel other, less expensive phones meet your need, then you won't pay $1,000 for a phone.
It is like broadband - If you are not a heavy user, you won't see the inherent value in paying for a gig of service. If you require more bandwidth and higher speeds (or you may just be one of those that likes "the new flashy thing") then you will see the value.

Sadly, this is true.
I've never bought a phone that was over $300, because i find the same usage out of a 2016 model vs a 2018 model.

Paying $20,000 for a slice of bread would be ridiculous, because it is a slice of bread, and there are no reasons why it should be $20,000. Paying $20,000 for a car may or may not be considered ridiculous for reasons like how much it costs to make, what it can do, the amount of use you will get out of it...
Doesn't matter how much it costs to make it...the question is about value in performance and operations.
Someone else used the Galaxy S7 as an example. You can get one brand new for $380 at best buy.
Are you telling me that an Iphone X is well over 100%(twice) better than an S7 from a performance perspective? And if so, why? because it costs apple more to make it?

But that is not what decides cost in our glorious capitalistic market. It's about what the company can charge and the people are willing to pay. Obviously the people Apple is wanting to sell this phone to are willing to pay this cost. You may not be, but what you believe something should cost because of your perceived reasons for that cost is of no concern to the market.

My phone cost $300 and works great. I get calls..... I hang up on them..... All I get are sales calls.... A few friends text me... I post shite like this......

As a proud iPhone X owner, the only people crying about the price are poor people
People were buying iphones up at 800, so is it really the price which would equate to about 8 dollars more per month, or the difference in that thousand dollar barrier and what they were previously

Saw this ad in a sales flyer and thought of this thread. I know, or at least hope, the people that get a galaxy this way aren't keeping it until they own it. Still, why would anyone pay $40/week for a phone for any amount of time? What's the purpose?

Man, those rent a centers are still fricking people. You would think with the cheap prices of electronics that they would be out of business by now.

Been using my X for a few months now - best phone I’ve ever owned, hands down. Fast, great pics, apps fly, videos are crisp, thin, light and easy to use without a button - which feels weird to me now.
I got mine in a buy an X, get an 8 for free with ATT. I got the X, she got the 8, and our 11 year old got her 7s. My old 7 was having issues and our son was in need of a phone so it worked out well that we didn’t have to buy 2 phones. Try and find a deal - get more value out of it.

I broke down and bought the X, and for me, I came to the conclusion the price was ridiculous in light of the fact I was satisfied with the phone I had.
In the past I remember being so enamored by some aspect or feature that I didn’t care what the price tag was ....like the improved screen resolution and camera when upgrading from the 3 to the 4s, or the screen size from 5s to the 6+. Not this time. While I like True Tone, facial recognition, and the improved camera, for the most part, it feels like an unnecessary iterative upgrade I could do without.
Consequently, I’m fairly certain this will be my last upgrade until this phone dies.

I bought the original iPhone for $299 and at the time thought that was dumb. Phones are going to the same model as just about everything else these days.
“Who cares what it costs, when you can pay it 30 easy payments!” Once the masses get used to that $40 a month phone note, the cost will rise and the terms will stretch. Sucks for those of us that would rather just buy their phone and be done with it. I have a 6+ and a declining interest in social media and being always connected. May well just jump off the smartphone train when this one dies.

To me this is the biggest misnomer about phone prices. No one realizes that all those iphones they were buying for 199-299 were all subsidized prices. I don't remember what the real price was but I wouldn't be surprised if it was 750 or higher at least.

Actually the original iPhone was $399 (4gb) non-subsidized. I was mistaken on the $299. It was originally $499 then Apple dropped the price $100 and gave a bunch of people store credit after they complained.
