So long story short, I’m currently with Cox…..last week my internet/cable went out on Tuesday, called and set up an appointment for Thursday, by Thursday it had come back on, but it was only working for a few hrs at a time. Guy came out on Thursday and unfortunately it was back on at that point and the guy lazily just changed out the cable box and modem (ours was super old) and did nothing else. We had another prolonged outage on Friday, got a guy out on Saturday and he claims the issue is stemming from a corroded box external to our house so they’d need a maintenance crew to come out and fix.

My wife and I both work from home and this has become a large problem. While service is mostly ok, we are still getting blips which kicks her out of meetings/stops processes from running. Is there anything we can do as a redundancy to fix this? We’ve considered switching to AT&T fiber, but I’ve heard mixed reviews.

If Att fiber is available switch to it immediately.

If you truly want a redundant connection with dual providers it can be done.

lol...From people who dont have it ?

The ONLY fibre I wouldn't sign up for right now is Spectrum because its fibre to your yard, coax to your house

If you aren't on this already, you should have switches yesterday

Will we need to do anything special? So if we have a redundant connection, does that mean the meetings/processes won’t drop? Neither of us are super technical, so I’m completely lost. Cox is saying fiber is on the way from them, so I don’t necessarily want to cancel.

If you want automatic failover you will need a router with dual WAN ports.

They will probably still drop for a bit before resuming on the redundant connection. You may not notice it while doing misc browsing and such but if you have an active video or voice call at the time then you will probably notice or maybe have to restart the call.

But I'm not all that experienced here so maybe someone can correct me.

at&t fiber isn't perfect but it will definitely be better than you are experiencing.

I switched from At&t fiber to Xfinity. The xfinity service is fiber to my node and coax to my house. Zero issues with it and my uptime actually exceeds what at&t fiber delivered but my Xfinity system has been upgraded to mid-split with rPHY. the rPHY nodes bring a reliability that is similar to PON fiber networks. If I was on an old coax system, I'd still be on fiber.

I don't know your technological ability is, but if it's low, setting up a redundant/failover setup will most likely be very expensive

If you have a decent level, you can probably get something setup for a few hundred bucks

TP-link makes a nice little router that can do the failover for around $70. Practically plug and play as long as both ISPs are DHCP (which should be for Cox and at&t).

But in reality it just isnt needed with at&t fiber unless you are in a new build area where people are building houses around you.

We switched from Cox to AT&T fiber about 8-9 months back. No issues with reliability. I also WFH 80% of the time these days.

Do you have lots of meetings where you’d notice a connection slip? I don’t do many meetings at all so I’m not noticing anything, but my wife is getting dropped from meetings and processes she’s running are getting dropped.

I agree. The only downtime I've had with ATT is when they forgot to bury our cable when we moved in and the lawn crew cut it

I had a buried fiber cut 3 different times as houses and fences were built around me. By far the worst part of fiber.

My only long term outage was when a neighbor was struck by lightning and the gateway fried. Took a couple days to get replacement.

I would have regular outages at night, usually around 3AM, when the gateway received a firmware update. They were usually around 5-7 minutes long. I'm not anal about uptime so that didn't bother me much but I know it irks some folks.

I'm probably on 30 Teams calls per week

No issues so far.

As mentioned you'll need a router with dual wan ports.

We use these at our small sites with SD-WAN. LINK

If you are into tinkering, I think they got an OpenWRT version up and running for it.

Not really needed for my case since it's just a VPN client essentially, and it's already baked in to the software provided.

I do plan on trying to create a portable VPN router for when I travel. They have a bunch of cool options on Amazon
