I have a small photo, roughly 2x4", from my grandpa's time in WWII. I'd like to enlarge it and have it reprinted. CVS/Walgreens did a decent job, but the quality really diminished the larger it got.

Are there any places in Louisiana that can handle digitally (I assume) enhancing the photo and printing it larger? Because it is a photo from WWII and my grandpa's, I'd prefer to not mail it somewhere.

Any help is appreciated!

I could do this for you. what size are you looking for and what type of material? I'm in Lake Charles. if you could have it scanned you wouldn't need to mail it and i understand why you wouldn't want to. Also is this photo an original developed onto film paper?

It shouldn't be super complicated, even a $70 flatbed scanner can do this, including decent enhancement. The problem is that the source material is always going to dictate the quality of the final product. Get it away from other paper, now, not later, as the acids from other paper types (photo albums and the crappy plastic and glue, etc.) and inks will further degrade what is left of the print.

I wouldn't mind having a few options, size-wise. Up to ~11x14ish?

You're talking about 2 different things. Thing 1 is having it digitized. Going from print to digital. Thing 2 is having it enlarged and possibly enhanced. Thing 1 affects thing 2. As you enlarge the photo, quality will degrade. So you want to find the person with a scanner that has the highest dots per inch that you can. For that size I'd say a minimum of 1,600 dpi. That might get you to 11x14 range but I'd go smaller than that.

Basic enhancements aren't terribly difficult. In fact Photoshop has "Neural filters" or AI tools to do this. I've used them and they are slick. They won't work miracles, but they can really improve enlargements. There is even an option to colorize black and white photos.

Good luck.

Larry Johnson did a great reconstruction for me in 2022 which required high resolution digitization of picture a bit larger than yours. Most of his time is spent being an outstanding pet photographer, but you can inquire about restoration.

That’s a pretty cool picture. I can see why you are interested in enlarging it.

In the old days, this is very true. AI does wonders.

Scan it and have AI clear it up in the resolution you want.

Yep, AI doesn’t an awesome job of this now. Don’t have to pay anyone for it.

I had an old boss whose father was on a bomber crew in the New Zealand Air Force in WWII.
I took a 5 x 7(?) picture of the full crew and blew it up to 11 X 17 on our office copier.
It turned out great and is hanging in our spare bedroom.
