Did you train it yourself to do that? Or do you use a service for that? I've toyed with the idea of training it to do take-offs for me, but a) It seems it would still take a lot of double-checking as a mistake in my bid could be very costly, and B) plans these days are so much worse than plans 10-20 years ago. Architects put out shite plans and expect miracles.

To be honest you guys are making me question my use cases. Maybe I am getting lucky so far with it reading PDFs?
Earlier models did make stuff up a lot but with ChatGPT 6 and Fable I have not caught one mistake.
Is there any way I can test this further?

We don't self perform much work so the take offs are less important to me than they are the subs.
I normally run it thought chatgpt, then have claude check the results of chatgpt and then i do final review.
Time and compute intensive so this is only for items that are expensive if we get wrong.

Yea - that's likely part of your issue then. Scanning usually means image based PDF's and not text based PDF's. To get decent OCR results from image based PDF's, the PDF's usually have to be pretty clear and scanned at 300 DPI or more. And even then, OCR can still be hit or miss.

If the PDFs are small they usually don't have too many issues.
Manufacturer datasheets etc are notoriously hard for LLMs.
Which is also a great use case for AI to save time.
Lately we have been setting up a specific agent just for reading large PDFs.. Mostly has to be chunked and converted into another format.

My friend is showing me a lot more. I may be stsrtinga janitorial business on the side and really want to do as little as possible. His AI will do everything from get the business license to read my physical mail.
