Can an HDMI cable make a difference in picture quality? I have always held the belief that it either worked or it didn’t with HDMI cables. But I recently bought an 8 ft cable and I’ve noticed a good bit of granny images on my tv and less than sharp images. In trying to figure out the issue I was wondering about the cable.

It can but you can get a good quality HDMI cable on Amazon for less than 10 bucks.
It's more likely what you are watching. Most streams are not high resolution.
A simple test might be to view a DVD or Blue Ray movie and compare it between the suspect cable and a high quality HDMI cable.

Yes. But similar to what GurleyGirl said you don't have to spend and astronomical amount of money. Quality doesn't scale with purchase price. There are some great quality cables that are inexpensive out there that are just as good or even better than the overpriced cables.

Problems might show up if you start going to longer cables. I have a 75ft and had to get some sort of fiber hybrid cable.

Are there recommended brands to use? I did see to go with a certified high speed cable

I've always gone with Monoprice HDMI cables and never had an issue. As mentioned if going long distance (>50 ft imo), I'd be looking at active/fiber cable.

Have you confirmed that the TV settings are what they were/are supposed to be?

I use Zeskit Maya cables for all my 4K content and haven't had any issues with them (I've even used them with UGREEN HDMI Extender cables without issue).

This is mostly true in a way, but there are different levels of "works". The source and display have to negotiate the data rate and capabilities (resolution, refresh rate, color depth) that they support via the cable, and if the cable is an older HDMI version (or low quality as to not meet the specs of the claimed version, at least as far as your devices are concerned) then you won't get the best quality possible.

But like others have said, you don't have to spend a lot, just don't get the bottom of the barrel.
