good luck with that. See the active converter box in my above post. And even that likely may not work due to HDCP

So through all this did we determine that hdmi will have better sound quality?

Yes....because component has NO sound at all.

So where is the sound coming from? I just have components from my box to my tv.

your box should have optical or 'red white' RCA jacks on the back you'll have to have cables for.

That may be what I have, probably built into the build of cables. It's been a while since I messed with it.

hdmi has spoiled us quick. long gone are the hassles of dealing with separate sets of cables for audio and video.

i just wish a simaller hdmi footprint would become SOP on AVRs. i think those fat-arse hdmi cables and giant HDMI ports should be a thing of the past.

no reason redmere and mini-hdmi or micro-hdmi couldn't become standard so we dont need such fat cables going everywhere

I'm trying to find one, not get rid of one.

Yeah, that's why I got confused about "component audio" since my only experience with it is via the old Wii component video cable bundle. It also includes audio, but the audio is technically separate, like composite. So the audio debate is RCA vs. optical vs. hdmi.

That's where the confusion is here. It all feels the same when you are plugging in a bundle of cables and just matching the colors.

What needs to become standard is HDbaseT...its HDMI over cat cable. Some receivers I think are starting to put it maybe...or some are thinking about it. MUCH longer runs...much cheaper wire....smaller footprint...and can also send data over the same line.

True, but if the OP has the right set up, he can output 1080p via component and decode the DTS-MA, etc at the source and pass it through 5.1 or 7.1 analog out.

Tell me more about this? rundown of the technology? What is it? benefits? hurdles? If it's so awesome, why isn't it being adopted? I've never heard of it.

OP has a broken TV and an XBOX. I don't think he's got a Oppo BDP with 7 channel pre outs or a receiver with multichannel inputs.
