I understand enough about ATT to know that they would have to pay me to use any service that they offer at my personal residence.

Regarding the speed thing....if other fiber companies allow you to get full speed to your router why wouldn't ATT???? Hell LUS used to have the same deal they required you to use their wireless gateway and it was plug, play, and check one box on the gateway settings to get a passthrough. They don't do that anymore I don't think (require their equipment), but still technically it is possible which makes you wonder why ATT can't/won't make it work.
they want control of that security certificate. Its crazy that they cant do like every other company and require you to call in the serial number of whatever fiber modem you want to use, but they dont. The gateways are garbage as well.

What's #1-5? I'm looking for a few reasons to drop them and stick with TMobile Home Internet 5G.

You wont find enough reasons for that other than price. The fiber is going to beat wireless every time.

T-mobile wireless home internet is already suffering from congestion in a lot of areas and they use CG-NAT which is not acceptable to a lot of networking enthusiasts.

Verizon wireless home internet is also good if you can get it.

It isn't just the certificate. I think the security is handled by the ONT for setups with separate ONT/router.

The other big reason is that At&t harvests all customer data. The gateways regularly record activity and send it back to the data centers where it gets harvested and sold. They use deep packet inspection so they can see everything, even VPN data. At&t gateways are part of the DPI process for their network.

EDIT: If anyone is looking for an ISP that doesn't use DPI on all their data, oddly enough Google Fiber is the only ISP I have found the specifically states they do not and will not use DPI on customer data.

just buy a mesh wifi network and put APs in needed locations.

Before I got fiber installed I went down the Ubiquiti rabbit hole as well and have multiple APs spread out all over the house now and 2 of their switches powering the APs and acting as a splitter to hardwire as much as possible.

I was lucky enough to have a house that was hardwired for ethernet already so placing a Unifi AP in the attic was possible and easy.

If you're able to do that as well I'd get One of these and One of these to power it and use that for coverage all over your house.

yea but they could allow the certificate to be allowed via phone call right? just like cocks does with their modems.. you have to call and they give your modem permissions. You would think they can harvest what ever data they want to being the ISP. I dont know anything about that aspect of networking Im just a DIYer so i know enough to be dangerous with hardware and firmware.

For ATT, I had to login to the modem and disable the router.

The mesh network will then take over as router.

What I’m trying to find out is which one to get. I went down a rabbit hole when I had a second this afternoon. However, I’m no better off than I was before. House was built in the mid 90s, so no pre wire.

RamRod…. So you’re saying just run a what Cat 5/6 wire out to under the patio and mount something there? Or I can get a mesh system and just use that? I could run the wire easy enough. I already have a hole drilled where I had speaker wire out there.

That being said, I think I may prefer to just have something in the house like one of those mesh systems. frick I don’t know….

IF and big IF, you can run CAT6 wire in and around your house, just get ethernet switches and hard wire your house. Then you don't need a mesh router at all. You can simply use the back of the ATT Gateway and run 5 (maybe 6?) ethernet cables to different switches around your house. Most switches then have 5-10 additional ports for ethernet cables.

Then you'd only need WiFi for things such as Ring/Nest Cameras or other things that are wifi only.

Yep. My AP has been solid in the attic. My switch gave me issue for the first time in 2 years this past weekend but I think it was a software glitch or something further up the stream.

yes, run cat 6 and get unifi AP light and a POE injector and hook up.

They can see that you are using a VPN, but how are they going to see the data moving through it?
