I bought a raspberry pi on a whim thinking I'd enjoy installing retropie and playing some old games. After getting it setup, not sure how much use I'd actually get out of it. Trying to think of some other uses for it. One I'm considering is a media server for my truck that could stream movies to my daughters tablet.

Just curious what other cool projects everyone has used them for.

I basically use one microsd for all retro games (nes/atari/etc) and another microsd to side load kodi. It does ok with kodi but my firetv is much better to handle it.

Im looking into other projects as well

Pi hole is the greatest... If you have people coming over with unrooted phones or iPhones it blows their minds

Not a microcontroller, it's a single board computer.

Just watched a YouTube video of a series of blast gates in a dust collection system in a work shop, each controlled by little levers that were run back to an arduino. The guy was using a little keypad to automate the operation through the arduino. Pretty cool.

This is brilliant. Do have a tutorial link for it?

I enjoyed setting up Raspberry Pints on mine for my home brew setup.

I haven't found one yet, but I don't imagine it would be too difficult

I built my entire christmas lights/music sequence on an arduino and relay board. On a raspberry pi, I setup a small API that allows people to text a phone number that will automatically start the lights/music. It's pretty nerdy but whatever. The neighborhood likes it at least.

I would link a video but it's on my youtube channel and shows my name

This is the sign I had printed...

Kodi on my Pi3 works really well. There are a few youtube videos that come out bi-weekly with updated info on streams.

I'm using a handful of them at work right now, testing a security camera system. I'm running 12 IP cameras, and for a few months I had Zoneminder running on an old core2duo machine we had. It was basically running at 100% load for about 5 months before it keeled over, so I decided to use a few RPi3's this go 'round. Zoneminder is pretty neat in that you can run it on as many machines as you want, and just make them all connect to the same storage and database on the backend so they act as one large system. I'm currently using 5 RPi3's, which when counting the power supplies and SD cards cost about $225 total. I think I would be hard-pressed to put together or buy a used machine at that price to do the same work. It's probably not the absolute best bang for the buck for what I'm doing, but the added benefit of ease of upgrading by simply adding more Pi's puts it over the top for me.

The next thing I will probably do is use one as a home automation hub. Again, it probably won't be the best value strictly on price/features, but the open nature and flexibility of it makes it worth it IMO.
