Yes, but I’m more looking for the old box

Has the cube replaced the original fire tv box?

Yeah, whenever they come out with new versions of things they typically replace the older version.

When you go to the Amazon Fire TV devices page the cube is right there.

Why?

Probably because the Fire Sticks have a reputation of being under-powered and the Cubes have an Echo Dot attached which I wouldn't want for a variety of reasons.

I had the same questions when before I got the 4k Max stick or whatever the top of the line one is called. Vermilion, if that's your concern, the top of the line Firesticks have decent power now. Not as good as the Cube, but certainly better than your old Fire TV box.

But that's not what he is asking. There are Amazon Fire Cube/Boxes that he can buy, but he wants the older version of the same thing.

You're goign to spend $140 on a Firetv cube?
You do know you can get a 50" tv with a built in Roku at Wal-Mart for $200?
I bought the 50" Onn Rokutv a few months ago on sale for $148.

And the cube is on Amazon

I have zero faith in built in smart TVs. I’ve had a few and they bog down quickly.

I’d rather have an independent set-top box

Built in smarts are usually under spec'd hardware running a chosen platform (Roku, Google, etc). They are typically trash, especially in the $200 price range. You should have an external device for the best/legit experience of your chosen platform.

That said, if Fire Cubes are $140 now there is no way that would be my first choice with the Nvidia Shields right there in price. Amazons tainted version of Android TV is too terrible to deal with for $140. In a cheap firestick used occasionally, sure.

Fat Batman, nailed it. I would not recommend a FireTV Cube. Nvidia shield is a better device without question.

Personally, I'd get a Roku Ultra for like $100, because silly as it sounds I like the remote and it works well.

For most people, the remote and the interface/gui will be the most critical thing. My wife is used to the fireTV/Firestick interface that I feel like that is what I will stick with for the lower aggravation factor. It is also why I now prefer to have a TV with a built-in interface. It makes my life easier from a tech support (me) for my wife issue.

There’s nothing to them to be under spec’d as far as the streaming device goes.
I have a 10 year old Sony android tv that still works just fine. I’ve got two cheap arse Roku TVs that are 3-4 years old that have zero issues, and a larger and nicer 65” TCL Roku tv that’s 5 years old with zero issues.

Unfortunately they did away with the smaller Fire TV a long time ago for the Cube that has Alexa built in.

I have two Sony TVs with Android as the smart OS and it is great. I would definitely recommend them.

I would also take a look at the new Google TV Streamer for $99.
