I really only buy Cisco switches for work, and I'm definitely not going with a refurb or used device in our environment. Didn't really occur to me to look for used models...

Well duh, but it's a great option for homelabbing over ubiquiti

This is probably extremely common, which is why the market is flooded with cheap used models.

Be cautious when buying used Cisco equipment. Years ago Cisco switched to a subscription based licensing model. Used equipment bought for cheap online, might need a yearly subscription to function properly.

From Cisco regarding Smart Software Licensing:
quote:

If a device has not communicated within 30 days, an alert will be sent notifying the user that the device has not been used. After 90 days with no communication, the license usage is released, however, the device itself will continue to run in an “Authorization Expired” state until the ID certificate is revoked, which is one year after the last communication. At this point, the product returns to evaluation mode under the terms of the particular product’s evaluation policy.

So I’m going with a Netgear gigabit switch. Do I need to get a PoE version. I don’t really know much about PoE. Amazon has a 16 port PoE+ @115w. I’m guessing this will be sufficient for home use...?

PoE is Power over Ethernet, which is used for supplying power along with data to devices that need it like security cameras and wifi access points. Since you are remodeling, I would definitely run wires for security cameras whether you plan to install them right away or not. So yes I would also get a PoE switch. One thing to watch out for with PoE switches is a lot of them only have power on half the ports, which a 16 port switch with 8 PoE is probably fine for most houses.

You'll be replacing it in 6 months.
Buy a Ubiquiti and be done for a few years.

I've had a spare one running at my parents house for about 2 years now with no issues

Just picked up WS-C2960S 48 ports on Fleabay for $65... (didn't need any more POE switches) These just reached EOL for ios in 2018, more than sufficient for my homelab.

Do you know if you can limit the POE wattage on the ports? For 75 bucks this would be awesome to have in a home network but I want to say I've had issues with ubiquity AP's burning up from too many watts from the switch POE.

You sure that wasn't an instance of someone supplying passive PoE to a device that was not expecting it?

And if you get one of these cisco switches for a home network, be aware that they were NOT designed to be quiet! They were designed to keep themselves cool while being sandwiched between other devices that generate heat, so they blow a LOT of air and you'll know about it. However you can get quiet aftermarket fans for them, or I've seen many cases of people removing the fans altogether and they run just fine for years.

I use a Netgear prosafe at home. Picked it up on ebay for cheap. Pretty much dummy proof.

I know the older square Ubiquiti APs had that overwatt/blowout problem, which they fixed with all of their circular unifi APs
