Best home router for speed? Orbi?

Just got a new orbi router - and it doesn’t seem so fast and seems to kick off phones at night - any suggestions or am I just using this damn thing incorrectly

A few things I can think of
1) Test the router speed on your phone being right next to the main router, not one of the satellites. You should get your strongest signal and speed here. Use the speedtest app or fast.com. If the speed is good here then your problem is probably positioning of the satellites.
2) Go to each satellite and test them for signal strength/speed like you did on the main router. If you get poor speeds you may need to reposition satellites. My main connection is upstairs and the stairs interfered with sending my signal downstairs. I had to position 1 satellite upstairs past the stairwell to relay the signal to the satellite downstairs near my TV rather than trying to go directly from the router through the interfering stairwell to my downstairs satellite.
3) If phones are getting kicked off at a certain hour then you probably should log into your Orbi's setup web page or app. They typically do have settings that let you set a curfew for devices, so this may be turned on. If it's more random it could just be signal issues which hopefully you address with #2.

all the netgear routers/APs have issues with mobile devices. You will get a great connection when you first connect to the Netgear but if the device then moves throughout the house, the speeds drastically reduce.
it is a known bug with Netgear. For any static wireless devices (TVs, stream boxes, etc.) Netgear speeds will be very solid.

thank you... that is 10000% the case here... what router would you reccomend for mobile devices? I can take this orbi back if there is a better option

Optimal performance would be having wired access points, which could be 2 same type models with one as router and other as AP mode.

I dont know enough about all the options to feel confident in any suggestions but here is what I am familiar with:
- I have TP-Link Deco X20 (2 routers). I love them but they aren't for everyone. They do not have dedicated wireless backhaul which is fine for me because I have mine hardwired. They have the trendmicro home protection suite which is good and has no subscription. The newer ones don't use trendmicro and there have been issues with the software.
- The TP-Link commercial stuff is top notch. If you want best speeds and a high quality setup, this is a good option.
- Unifi is always solid but can get a bit sophisticated with the setup
- EERO. Many many people love the EERO devices. I dont know much about them but they are very affordable on Amazon. Check them out.

We went from Orbi to Eero and it was a big improvement. Granted, the Orbi setup was a couple of years old, but it had gotten quirky. I always doubted that the Orbi was really our issue given the sheer number of advocates and recommendations Orbi gets, but the network guy we hired that Orbi was probably the mesh he replaced the most, for whatever that is worth.

I have unifi at home and have installed it for couple setups for buddies and they love that i can check and update remotely for the most part. I’ve been waiting for another use case (friend) to do a TP Link Omada setup cause im curious how it performs/manages compared to unifi

Nah, that's bullshite. I've run an R7000 and an R8000 for nearly a decade, and they're fine.
I'll point out something that a lot of folks don't pay attention to: heat. Well ventilated is high performance.

I've had my R7000 in my hot attic for 10 years and it's been pretty flawless.

unifi dream machine is best imo for AP + router + Console.

When I lived in Indiana, my Orbi router was in my detached, un-aircnditioned garage and my satellite was in the house. It worked great in zero degree weather and 100 degree weather.
Now I'm in Florida, and my router is in the house and the satellite is outside in my summer kitchen cabinet. I get very good speeds, inside and out.
