do i need the X or will an 8 be an adequate update from the 7?

That depends on what you're looking for in a phone.

Ignoring the fancy new bells and whistles, the iPhone X has

- 2 hours longer battery life than the 7
- a 5.8 inch screen (the plus is 5.5) in roughly the same footprint as the 7/8 (4.7 inch screens)
- Dual lens camera (previously only available on the plus)

So the X will have the size external measurements as my 7 but with just a bigger viewing screen?

I just dont want the HUGE plus size

So literally the only difference hardware wise in the 8 to X using Apple's compare tool is the Screen and slightly better camera.

For 200-250 dollars more.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I'm locked into my 7 plus for a while but $1150 to get into a base model iPhone X after taxes is pricing me out just on principle. As far as Apple stuff, I'd much rather drop that on an iPad Pro or a Mackbook Air. I can't see spending that on a phone when a phone is not a durable product like an iPad or Mac that lasts 3-5 years or more. I've had iPhones since the 3GS and at two years they get long in the tooth.

How's the wireless charging? I heard that it's rather slow compared to being plugged in.

Is there any benefit to keeping your phone the full 28 month payment period as opposed to just swapping it out every year?

The 1000 dollar price tag seems like a lot but when I think about how much I use and rely on my phone and how many times a day I do something on it, I feel like I get my money's worth out of it.

Compared to the prices we pay for other luxury items, 1000 doesn't seem like all that much.

I probably have 2000 in my golf bag and use that stuff once or twice a week.

Right, so shouldn’t that = more for the trade in?

From what they were saying in the presentation, your eyes need to be open. It can apparently tell if you're actively looking at the screen. S

FWIW, I use the facial recognition on my Surface Pro all the time. I have to be looking at it for it to work and unlock. Also have to be a certain distance away and in clear line of sight. It hasn't been an issue (and really it's pretty convenient) but I have no clue if the iPhone would behave the same way.

I've got to be honest. There's nothing outside of being so far rooted in the "ecosystem" that's keeping me buying iPhones. My 7 is nothing special. It's just a phone. It's been an long time since I was legitimately excited about a device. But it would be a pain in the arse to lose easy access to movies, music , games and control over my Apple TV. I'm sure there are plenty of ways around that but I'm too lazy to figure it out.

You give me a phone that's easy to hold, has good battery life, has a scratch proof screen and is resilient enough that I don't have to spend $100 putting it in a case and I might spend a little more money on it.

I can't decide what to order... I really like the idea of a larger screen if the X in the same footprint as the 6/7/8. I have a 6 now that honestly still works pretty good. Part of me just wants to order a 7 and save a lot of money. I'll probably wait a few months so I can't play with the X to see if it's really worth the money

Yep, as someone said you would own it. I prefer to trade it in. I have to say, having 256gb has been convenient. Will be getting a 64gb X

Sup toof. I think I'm gonna get the 64GB too. I'm only using 40 GB now and majority of that is photos/videos. $56/month just seems a bit much compared to my $41 I pay now.

X is a nice looking piece though! Looking forward to a smaller phone with bigger screen.

Augmented Reality

I watched the entire event. I saw all the AR stuff...just doesn't really excite me enough to push me to upgrade. Yeah, the MLB and constellation demos were cool....but just that. It's just not something that interests me very much.

It shouldn't yet. Games aren't going to sell a phone, but if app developers can find a way to make it worthwhile then it becomes indispensable. One of the apps I've seen mentioned is using the 3D camera tech to measure rooms and such. Home decor and home improvement might be an area where AR can gain traction. What if contractors could give you estimates based on photos or videos you take with your phone instead them having to come out on site?
