The sad thing about today is that The Big Debate is over unlocking the phone. Nothing else. Whichever side of the argument you are on, you are debating unlocking the phone. No other features. Nothing groundbreaking. Nothing that you can actually do with your handheld computer once you get past the screensaver. That is what is disappointing to me.

Exactly. This is what I was getting at. Updated screen and cameras are expected each year. But there really was nothing that made me sit up and take notice. Not even the X with the edge-to-edge screen. Sure, it's nice, but it's nothing really making me say, "Man, I need to be sure I'm up and ready to pre-order. I need the upgrade." Because, honestly, I'm not sure there's much of an upgrade here.

Yes, wireless charging would be nice. But I've going this long without it. I don't think that's enough to push me to pre-order.

No time to read whole thread but what are my pre order options if I'm on the Apple upgrade plan already? TIA

Am I the only one that doesn't give a shite about the camera? Every Apple event, they spend 15 minutes talking about camera upgrades and IDGAF.

The only two reasons I'd get the iPhone X is edge-to-edge screen and wireless charging.

i'm also really interested in an oled screen, i loved it when i was a samsung galaxy user.

that said, i'm not a fan of the facial recognition for unlocking. a finger scanner should have been placed on the back of the phone or something.

Depends on which phone you want.

If you want the iPhone 8, pre-orders are this Friday.

If you want the iPhone X, they won't be until October 27th.

Cramming a better HD camera into a smaller case is a big deal.

I'm the same way. I use the camera a good bit and it's obviously nice, but they lose me during their camera demos as well as their gamer demos and that's a pretty big chunk of their event. The only demos that appealed to me were the AR demo of the baseball game and the constellations.

I'm not sure what kind of groundbreaking breakthroughs you're looking for from Apple, but there are only so many ideas. The fact is that is the expectation from Apple, so they press too hard trying to fix what isn't broken.

Removing TouchID was trying too hard. I'm not sure how a backfacing touchID would have worked with wireless charging, but that was a better solution than scrapping it altogether.

They've laid the foundation for something new and cool with all of the AR tech, but it's going to take app developers to make AR a thing worth buying a phone for. Outside of something like that there really isn't a whole lot of new ground to break. My wish list on phones in general and my iPhone 6 specifically is

- Better battery life
- Larger screen but still one handable
- More durable

I'm not itching to upgrade, but when I do the X gives me more of what I'm looking for than the 8, which would be much more of an incremental upgrade for me.

This was definitely the most promising item of the day, IMO.

The wireless charging adaptor is a pretty small piece. The LG G6, LG V20, Galaxy 7/7 Plus, Note 8, and other phones have wireless charging with the fingerprint scanner on the back.

Can I order it on the line? Or do I have to go in store? Didn't they make Apple upgrade customers go In store last year?

Augmented Reality

It was lightly touched on today

AR is the future "killer app" on phones

Good News is that it is gonna be on IP8

Yes.

Apparently there are rumors that they will ship them out this year. Haven't seen anything from Apple to confirm though.

That would be terrible if they didn't change it. Wtf do people who live hours from an Apple Store do?

No clue. I live 20 minutes from an apple store and still hate the idea of going to the store.

People littering their stores to get new phones increases the hype though.
