I need to upgrade my password storage situation and really don't want to pay for an app to do it but every internet search is flooded with ads and pay options.

Any free ones out there you guys might recommend?

Bitwarden is great. I highly recommend it. Bitwarden

Dashlane and LastPass are also good apps that I use. I just find Bitwarden to be easier and its browser add-in is more stable. There are plenty of good choices these days. Good luck.

To add Bitwarden is FREE to use across platforms unlike Lastpass.

Password protected Excel file. Better than some random government that owns these password companies having all your data. Just rename the file to Gayporn.xls and no one will open it.

KeePass.
iOS store has it.
Use DropBox to back up your KB files.
Neither cost anything.

10/10. And you can host your own instance if you want.

Do you find the FREE version of Bitwarden adequate for personal family use? It's just my wife and me, and I'm getting too damn old to remember passwords for all these apps and sites!

I have no issues with it. Both of you can share an account. It supports fingerprint login on phone and has an extension for Chrome. It doesn't kick you off if multiple devices are connected at once.

If you have separate logins for a site, you can choose which login & password to use on entry.

If something doesn't work right, it's not usually the password keeper app that is at fault, it's the website that blocks the auto-fill capability. It's probably under 5% of sites, but there's nothing BitWarden or Lastpass can do about it.

No. pay for a proprietary password app, that way you know its secure.

Definitely, BitWarden works very well. Self host it if you can (even runs well on a raspberry pi).

Nope, I am all for open source/free, but at least you know with 1password people cannot just hack into it.

Assuming that something is secure because you pay for it is an obvious fallacy. The opposite is more often true, at least in the case of open source software. The only way to be certain that your data is safe is if you inspect and understand the code protecting it, and if you control the system storing it.

For work I use KeePass.

For home I use Norton Password Manager.
