Apple said the first vehicles with support for the next-generation CarPlay experience will be announced in late 2023, with committed automakers including Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, Volvo, and others. Ahead of time, we have recapped five key features to expect from the new version of CarPlay.

Google with its Android Automotive and Apple are really schooling these legacy car makers on what great UI looks like. However I still prefer physical buttons for climate controls and volume and such.

Regarding the vehicles listed above, is this only for new(er) vehicles, or any vehicle that has Apple CarPlay already?
For instance, I have a 2022 vehicle and it supports Apple CarPlay wirelessly right now. I hope the new update applies for my vehicle as well (Acura).

I am pretty sure it will be for new vehicle only.
For Apple or Google to take over the entire infotainment system including vehicle controls through their own operating system, I think they have hardware and silicon requirements that the current cars will not have. At least that is how it works on Andoroid Automotive (not to be confused with Android Auto).

They couldn't come up with a different name?

This reminds me of clients that have 3-4 LLCs all named almost the exact same thing give or take 1 word. It is so annoying.

Where’s my full blown weather app?
My Tahoe has a dedicated Weather Channel app that shows live radar and everything.
Why can’t I use that in CarPlay? That’s stupid.

I have a 2022 Audi and the wireless connection w/ CarPlay seems buggy… hope they get that part figured out better.

Pretty big deal in integration. I like it a lot.

Works pretty flawlessly in a 21 Ford.

My wife has a 2017 Q7 and it's wired Android auto/carplay. That shite disconnects every 20 minutes. It takes another 20 seconds for it to "restart" and fix itself. I hate it.

We have a 2019 Honda pilot and had issues too. Changed the cable to a better quality one and it happened a lot less but still disconnects sometimes. Has to be a software or piece hardware that went out to many different manufacturers.

All this stuff is junk on screens. Going to keep my old school Toyota forever. I hate these massive screens

I think you find yourself in the extreme minority, so I feel bad for your future vehicle prospects

Some of that crap like a freaking calendar widget is extreme overkill. Also, I don't know why they continue to try and push touchscreen climate controls when no one likes it.

Hope it comes with a working auto pilot cause there's gonna be some distracted drivers

Mine does too now....when I first bought mine brand new in March 21 the Apple Carplay connection was about 50/50 at best...50% chance it would connect and 50% chance it wouldn't....sometimes I'd drive for an hour and all of a sudden it would connect.
It was extremely buggy in the beginning...now I don't have any issues with it. I can't remember the last time Apple Carplay didn't connect.

Dis why I assume they'll never enable Netflix or Hulu for Carplay

It would be trivial for them to code in the same kind of lock outs that won’t let you access certain settings menus if the car isn’t in park, etc. They don’t want to enable it because it would either look like absolute crap or cause the BOM on the screens to skyrocket if they put in touchscreens with quality video playback.
