Hoppe not even on the bench

Scally starts at LB for Gladbach vs Bayern. Richards is on the bench for Bayern.

Scally with an extremely impressive first 40 minutes here.

Scally looks damn good for an 18 year old going up against a top 3 team in the world.

He looked real good in the first half.

I don’t care if this is being a prisoner of the moment, but he’s already ahead of Vines and Bello. Call him up for the September window.

Considering how green Bello and Vines I don’t think that is much of a stretch. Scally just went 90 in a bundesliga game against Bayern Munich and absolutely looked the part. That’s as impressive a European debut for a youngster as I can recall. If Scally is the real deal, Scally and Dest marauding up each sideline for the USMNT in the near future . . . .

Gotta give credit to Germany, they've been really the only big soccer country that has consistently given Americans a chance over the last two decades.

I love when our young players go to Germany. That’s my preferred destination for them. Bundesliga teams are great at developing players and they’re not scared to play youngsters because all the teams besides Bayern are trying to sell.
It seems like most of our young kids that start in Germany have fared way better than the ones that go straight to England, with a few exceptions, of course.
I don’t know if Scally would start in a qualifier just yet, due to not playing for the national team before. But he’ll be the #2 LB behind only Antonee Robinson very quickly if he consistently plays like this in Germany. Very impressive debut.
It wasn’t that long ago that our LB pool was so bad I would have started a recently retired Old Man Beasley over any of the actual options.
We seem to finally have some good youngsters coming up, and possibly Jonathan Gomez, too.

If Scally can get one or two more games in and still perform on this level, then I would call him up in September.
Call in Dest, Cannon, Robinson, and Scally. Gives you 3 LBs and 3 RBs. Let Scally be #3 in both positions and get him acclimated.
Once Bensebaini returns, it'll be hard to break in at LB because he's one of the best attacking LBs in the league (and starting LB for Algeria). Netz is considered to possibly be the best LB prospect for Germany, so if Scally can stay ahead of him, that's saying something. I think Gladbach just set the record for the highest price paid for a domestic transfer of an 18 year old in Germany to get Netz.
I think Scally played better than Lainer today. It'll be tough to beat him, but Lainer was in a slump most of last year. If he gets in another, then RB is up for grabs. Lainer is OK at both ends of the field (and is the starting RB for Austria), but he's a pitbull that people hate to play against. Scally will have to bring something that outweighs that.

I know he has been mentioned in the thread before now but what is Scally’s story? Is he just stepping up earlier than previously expected?

From Long Island. Came up through NYCFC's academy. Signed a homegrown contract with NYCFC in 2018 as a 15 year old. Didn't play much for them because they have one of the best RBs in MLS. Was very involved with the USYNT teams. Sold to Gladbach in 2019 as a 16 year old for ~$2M with incentives that can increase that to ~$7M. Since he doesn't have a European passport, he stayed with NYCFC until he turned 18 on Dec 31, 2020. Joined Gladbach and started just about every game with their 2nd team this past spring.
