“It’s something I’ve thought a lot about during this quarantine,” Yedlin said. “My grandfather, my grandmother especially, I have a whole family of activists, they’ve always told me to stand up for what I believe in. There’s no amount of money that can make me shut up about something I think is wrong. It’s one of those waiting games to see if a change does happen. But if things go as they stand it’s hard for me as an African American male to represent a country that does things like this where all people aren’t equal.”

I have no opinion one way or the other on this other than I really hope this doesn't become a trend with other players.

In our best XI, I count 7 black players (Jozy, McKennie, Adams, Cannon, Dest, Brooks and Steffen)

That'd suck, but I'd understand it.

I’d rather suck arse in international soccer and have players out there that actually view playing as a prestigious opportunity than have a bunch of whiners that boycott the anthem and bad mouth the country.

Nah, I want to win.

Sure, I have pride that the USMNT reps my country, but look at how excited people were for the team before T&T and now look at the apathy.

It's a results business and I want good ones.

The only thing that doesn't totally bum me out about losing Yedlin is that he has fallen off big time in the last 2 years, so this doesn't hurt those potential results that much.

At least we're pretty deep at RB right now.

If he drops out because of this there will come a day when he will regret it.

I find his stance confusing. Doesn't he realize the platform he has to help bring the change he wants is the national team? By boycotting the team he would be losing his voice, not amplifying it.

All he needs to do is see how Rapinoe catapulted herself and her ideals by playing instead of sitting out.

Edit** and for the record I have no personal opinion on this one way or the other either.

I respect this 1000x more than Rap.

He's walking away from good money and the most prestigious level of his profession, just for the sake of his principles.

I've had to unfollow Tim Weah from social media. He does nothing but bad mouth the United States when he chose to play for us. If he hates it so much he should have repped Liberia. At least I could respect Yedlin as he had no other choice in who he played for (to my knowledge at least).

It makes absolutely no sense to ask ‘for things to change’ and then leave the team.

Things have changed, Yedlin being on the team is a direct result of the change our country has had over the last 400 years.

I understand that there is more change that needs to happen, but this is a retarded way to go about it, imo.

I agree. My biggest gripe with Rapinoe is having her cake and eating it to. She bitches about representing our country then reaps the benefits of representing our country. If Yedlin thinks this is a big enough problem to not play, I'm fine with that.

Yedlin has been given amazing opportunities to succeed in America, despite his black parent not raising him and his white grandparents taking him in and raising him as their own. If he doesn’t want to play for us then frick him, I would rather have someone whose heart is in it.

He can go live somewhere where he feels he has a better opportunity.

Nobody is forcing him to live in America if it's so bad for him.

He should go spend a few weeks there and get back to us on that quote.

I would like to see him lay out what changes he wants to see, he may have and I just haven't seen it. Has US Soccer made him shut about anything? I don't think so. I hope this isn't just grandstanding. If his principles don't let him play then hats off to guy for passing up prestige and money for what he believes in.

Compare the US to other countries. I’m not saying it’s perfect here but the US is objectively less racist than the vast majority of countries on this planet. Contrast Yedlin’s complaints with what Fafa Picault experienced in Italy. I bet Yedlin never had anyone in Seattle throw bananas at him or tell him to go back to Africa.

I hate this argument. It often leads to meaning "just deal with it since it's better than other places." It's not like he's saying he'd rather play for Italy, Spain, etc.
