Togo wasn’t any worse than the usual African teams.

So letting in more teams isn’t going to lower the quality of the group stages?

I don’t really care that much since you can just choose to not watch the shite games but letting in more teams is pointless beyond making more money and devalues what it means to make the World Cup. Same thing with March Madness.

Oh it 100% is, but Germany beating a team 7-1 isn't necessarily proof of that.

I guess we should condense it to just two teams considering Germany beat Brazil 7-1 in the semis.

FTR, when we're talking about the "WORLD" Cup, I don't mind the tournament expanding. I mind the number we've expanded to. 48 is dumb if we're expanding the knockouts to 32 teams.

Having a group stage go on for three weeks to only eliminate 16 teams is beyond non-sensical.

If FIFA was deadset on having an extra round of knockouts, they should've made it 64 teams where it's 16 groups of 4 and the top two advance.

64 teams will happen in the next 12 years (3 WC cycles), I'd bet

More teams mean more tourists.

The cream will rise to the top. Don't worry.

I think it'll be sooner than that.

It makes too much sense. It doesn't add anymore games for the teams compared to a 48-team tournament, but it adds more games for the tournament.

Everybody wins.

FIFA wins because of commercial dollars
The players win because it's still the same amount of games
The fans win because the group stage goes back to having stakes again.

Looked at the lineups before the game and thought they must have used the wrong pic for the Japanese goalie lol

Ghanaian dad Japanese mom, and he definitely has Japanese features. Being a Jus Soli American citizen aside he very obviously identifies with his mother’s culture and never deviated from the Japanese youth system as he came up.

Let's see if the Japs try a long distance strategic sneak attack here.
