The Group K results gives DR Congo 1 of the 8 3rd place spots in the Round of 32 and giving us 1 of the more shocking group stage eliminations as South Korea will fail to advance to the knockout round

Updated Round of 32 match-ups after Group K ends

Germany vs. Paraguay
France vs. Sweden

South Africa vs. Canada
Netherlands vs. Morocco

Portugal vs. Croatia

United States vs. Bosnia & Herzegovina
Belgium vs. Senegal

Brazil vs. Japan
Ivory Coast vs. Norway

Mexico vs. Ecuador
England vs. DR Congo

Argentina vs. Cape Verde
Australia vs. Egypt

Colombia vs. Ghana

Already clinched & awaiting confirmation of opponent:
Spain
Switzerland

So Iran is in if Austria beats Algeria. Is that correct?

Yes. All comes down to Algeria. Neither team will be motivated though.

One of the things FIFA didn’t think about was how the H2H combined with the third place advancement could lead to another disgrace.

If we get a disgrace of Kansas City against Iran, a team that has had to travel internationally all cup, the outrage will be palpable lol.

Well now we’re down to the old group number of teams

Ivory Coast is probably the only team advancing to the R16

Morocco has been playing the best but they drew the Dutch

This is the first time in WC history that more than 1 sub-saharan Africa team has finished top 2 in the group. And 3 have done it in this WC.

South Africa, Ivory Coast, and Cape Verde. 5 CAF teams finished top 2 this WC. This is the best African WC performance in history.

Wouldn't Austria be out with a loss as well? Iran would have the same points and 0 GD to Austrias minus whatever amount they potentially lose by

Which is why this whole “both teams will try to lose” nonsense from the other day was so ridiculous.

Granted, I said there was a 99% chance South Korea was going to advance the other day and then crazy shite like Ecuador beating Germany happened.

If Algeria whips Austria's arse for 1982 it would make 6 CAF teams in the top 2 of the groups. Shattering the old record of 2.

The only pro of this game is that if Austria lose they are out
So they're kind of screwed to play Spain if they advance no matter what

Korea should definitely be ashamed to not advance given the gift of a group they were in

It does also set precedent going forward for future 48 team WCs that 3 points is almost never going to be enough unless you lucky or have massive positive GD

It would be such an Arnautovich move to get a red card in this game

FIFA: "We remember 1982... as both of you should too. If anything like that happens, you're cooked."
