Going to be a fun one today. Work might get in the way a bit, but I’ll figure it out.

Should have planned ahead and knocked up your wife 9 months ago so you'd be on paternity leave over the world cup.

I had it right 8 years ago - son was born on Day 1 of WC and I took a month off. Watched every game.

Now with another one due, the timing was far worse. I might get to see 3 games post-baby if I'm lucky then into the worst sports time of the year.

Yeah my wife popped 3 weeks early but am still getting in most of the world cup.

This is our last kid so I'm thinking I'll schedule myself to get snipped for week 1 of the college football season so I have an excuse to sit on the couch watching CFB all weekend.

excellent idea but book early if it's anything like around here. i was able to get mine done masters weekend a few years ago and it was great, just sat on the couch with a rotating collection of frozen peas on the nuggets

Updated likely path to the final projections for the US as of this morning

R32 Bosnia
R16 Egypt
QF Spain/Portugal
SF Germany/France
FN Argentina

Quarterfinal appearance = great
Semifinal appearance = holy moly
Final appearance = team of destiny
Final win = Jesus is coming back

IF Pulisic is fit, no reason we can't make it to the QF and be competitive in that game.

Egypt and Czech are no slouches but if we somehow make the QF, that is 100% a win for us. I think we can give Spain some heartburn too. I don't know what to think about Portugal so far.

If that's the actual bracket, there is no reason we can't make the QF
Portugal isn't making it that far based off their first game but there's a lot to play
Anything can happen but this could set up about as favorable as anyone would dream

I suspect that ends being Belgium when it's all said and done. Think they find a way to pummel NZ and Egypt draws Iran

And if semifinals are the goal, I don't think that's a bad thing. I think a knockout match with Belgium better prepares us for a knockout match with Spain

I think we will see a completely different Portugal with Ronaldo on the bench where he belongs

Quarters are the realistic goal, anything beyond that is "dare to dream" territory.

That's fair.

I do want us to beat a team that is perceived to be better than us though, and I don't think that can happen until the semis unless we draw Belgium in R16, which I think is still a pretty decent possibility.

Without an upset there's just 4 years of "you had an easy path". It would be amazing to send a Spain or Portugal packing in what would easily be the most watched soccer game by an American audience. That's the kind of match that can jumpstart a culture

I think America and Japan are both right on the doorstep of taking the leap

We're more than likely going to be on a collision course with Spain in the quarters.
