Was the other defender towards the top of the screen not further back than the one they showed in the review?

Definitely looked like it to me, why did that not get included? Is there some exception? Because he was totally onsides with that other player.

Don’t forget the Egyptian GK had challenged for the ball and was not one of the last two defenders. The defender on the post was the only one between the goal scorer and the goal.

Did the VAR call check the Egypt player who was at the back post? That guy was closer to the goal then the one they animated for the offsides check.

It’s 2nd deepest player no matter who it is.

99.9% of the time the deepest in the keeper, but he was so far out of position two of his defenders were behind him.

ETA: I’ve always felt the keeper should be locked in as the deepest player. Motherfricker runs out off his line and misses, too bad don’t be a fricking idiot.

because there's no goalkeeper distinction in the rule. So that guy is what you'd consider the goalkeeper in a regular offside

Hope it was just shite Zealand and Belgium didn’t get right tonight. They opened up a 2nd half can.

That is sort of my fear. Trossard, KDB, and Lukaku all scored. If Doku had got going as well I'd definitely be nervous that their attack finally figured it out.

Right now Belgium would play South Korea in knockouts, but I’m pretty sure if Algeria gets their expected draw tomorrow then Korea is out

Ahhh, yeah, I forgot the keeper was further up field than the goal scorer or the defender.

Yeah I googled what offsides even was after that happened. I lived my whole life always thinking it was the last defender, not the last 2 (as in, I didn't think the goalie would count as a a "defender" for the purpose of offsides). My mind is blown.

Theres a difference between dribbling defenders and actually getting on the scoresheet.

Prior to tonight all they had was own goal, and the entire attack was blanked. But now 2 of their 3 biggest goal scoring threats got one, and their first attacking sub got one as well.

Group G goes crazy & things get wild to wrap up the day

Belgium moves from 3rd to 1st & wins the group with a 5-1 win over New Zealand & a 1-1 draw between Egypt & Iran.

Egypt could've won the group but will settle for 2nd place

Iran was a toenail away from stealing 2nd place from the Egyptians in stoppage time but with the point earned should advance to the Round of 32.

New Zealand heads home.

Final Group G Standings:
Belgium 5 pts +4 GD
Egypt 5 pts +2 GD
Iran 3 pts 0 GD
New Zealand 1 pts -6 GD

Belgium’s last 3 were all scored with New Zealand bombing everyone forward. Belgium had the numbers in the counter on all 3. New Zealand played the last 30+ minutes completely out of control and in a full on press.

That’s not going to happen in the knockouts

Not only that but the NZ keeper looked terrible in his positioning. I'd say the last goal and the de bruyne goal were one's to fear. The other 3 looked more like NZ blunders.

Thats what Im telling myself, in part to settle nerves/convince myself

That it was just New Zealand after all, a not great defense.

The Lulaku goal was a bit of a joke.

Long ball over the top to a pretty wide open runner. Pulls it back and drops it to a trailing runner, no NZ defender within 15 yards even though he’s at the edge of the box. Lazy cross into the 6 yard where Lukaku heads it in without anyone within 5 yards of him.

NZ were running around like chickens with their heads cut off for the last 30 minutes of that game.
