Friedel, Howard, Keller, Guzan off the top of my head.

With our continual skill and gap issues, it seemed like it was the ONE position we could rely on being strong…until now. USA 100% had a chance in that game until Freese almost literally shite down his leg and forgot how to kick a ball, in a game where you almost exclusively use your feet.

Where did the goalies go?

The decrease in multi sport athletes took away the natural advantage the US had in developing goalies.

While this doesn't explain the talent drop off, the fact that we've moved away from pure shot stoppers and attempting to European-ize the GK position by focusing on abilities with ball at feet doesn't help.

We need someone who can make saves and clear the ball, not pull a Cryuff turn. See how well that worked out today.

Welp that sure worked out. Our goalie literally forgot how to kick. In soccer.

Freese had been solid up until last night

I think Freese is done. You can't survive that mistake.

One mistake doesn't make a career (for the most part). But to be fair to the original post, the issue is that traditionally that's a simple clearance. Freese got fancy and fricked up.

There were questions about him before the tournament.

What really killed us beyond our lack of defense was that Belgium would flood the middle defensively. They also keyed on and went after McKennie and Dest....so much so the Poch had to pull Dest because he was becoming so ineffective.

Also.....the Belgians were getting away with fouls last night that normally would have been called....nothing to a red card level, but I saw some that in a regular game would earn a yellow card or two.

It’s not his fault he is nowhere near the talent level as those previous keepers the OP listed. Those guys were playing in the top leagues in the world and Freese is in NYCFC, lol.

This is the worst set of goalkeepers I’ve ever seen in a World Cup cycle. I’m only 50 though.
