What XI do you want to see against Portugal

Watching World Cup Tonight on ESPN where Lalas and Twellman (
) were going over the potential lineup and who replaces Jozy.
Ultimately they decided to go back to the 4-2-3-1 with the same backline, Beckerdreads and Jones and the 2 d-mids, Bedoya & Zusi outwide, Bradley in the 10 and Dempsey up top.
Their reasoning was that, with a crowded midfield, we should be able to control possession (or at least hold our own) with Portugal. However, I'm not sure I'm down with Dempsey as a false 9. I feel like we need another striker to run off of him.

I love Deuce, but you hit the nail on the head here. We have to play a striker, even if it is Wondo.

that's probably what i would wanna do because im just not comfortable with johannson playing 60-90 minutes right now.
say what you want about the game last night, but he wasnt any good. yes, he got thrown in the deep end, yes there were few opportunities for him to show anything, and no he is not the same player as altidore. at the same time, he didnt really provide any help for us to build out of the back or the midfield. i dont really care if that's not the type of player he is, because that is kind of what we need now without jozy.
also, im a pretty firm believer in trying to get your best 11 players on the field if you can. the lineup you described is how i feel we can accomplish that.
p.s. starting wondo would be a disaster IMO

Wondo in
Zusi for Bedoya
Other than that, keep it the same. Obviously anything but ideal, but Wondo is the better option if we're playing the same way.

I would go back to the diamond I think and use the exact same starting XI from Ghana except have wondo up top with Deuce. Assuming Besler is good to go.
I like having the possession guys in the midfield, especially against Portugal. Wouldn't change much, but would hope for a better performance out of Bradley/Beasley

I'm not sure we want to play the same way though.
I like the idea of a crowded midfield, just not sure about our striker options.

I want to see Mix on the field.

I like him off the bench. Bring him on for Bedoya around the hour mark

In place of who? He will get abused out wide while Beckerman and Jones were our best players yesterday. Surely you are not suggesting Mix for Bradley.

Dempsey
Bedoya-Bradley-Zusi
Jones-Beckerman
Beasley-Besler-Cameron-Johnson
Howard
Viable subs:
Johannsson
Mix
Maybe Brooks
frick, we are shallow.
I prefer the 4-2-3-1, but we do not have a lone striker anymore. I am pretty upset with how thin the forward pool is right now. Really wishing we brought five forwards and seven defenders, since we tend to use two up front at times.
Another possibility could be to move Fabian to LB and Cameron to RB if we trust Brooks. However, it would hurt big time to move our best CB outside, but Portugal is a team with their focal point out wide to the left.

Chandler facing Ronaldo? I think we are back to disagreeing.

----------------Howard---------------
Johnson---Cameron---Besler---Beasley
----------Jones------Beckerman-------
---Bedoya------Bradely------Dempsey--
---------------Wondo-----------------
The reason for Wondo over Johansson. He always finds that open space and with 2 of the 4 starting defenders out, I think Wondo will be able to exploit that and find the gaps. Bedoya over Zusi just for his defense on Ronaldo.

1) Wondo as a lone striker is worthless. Much of his game is predicated on finding openings based on the runs made by his striking partner.
2) Dempsey will not even act like he will track back on the wing.

If we were to revert to a straight 4-4-2 I wouldn't mind Chandler on the right in place of Bedoya. Chandler will help us on the break in a big way.

I could get on board with that, but then you have to drop Beckerman, probably, which would be a shame imo.

You could play a 4-4-1-1 with Bradley behind Dempsey. I don't think we will ever do that though.

I would probably go with the Bedoya and Zusi midfield in front of Beckerman, Jones, and Bradley. Not my favorite option, but it is viable for a while. Should help with possession but not very lethal.
I'd prefer to have Johannsson start instead, and Zusi to be a sub (or Bedoya). I can live with either option,
I'd want Mix as an option in midfield as a sub, if Jones is in danger of getting sent off or Beckerman is outclassed.
Since we aren't playing Iran or Algeria, I don't see Wondo as the least bit viable.

I'm not really for that. would neuter our attack and our ability to keep possession imo. I don't think our forwards (or at least any forward combo at our disposal) are good enough to merit us sticking with any version of the 442.
I think I'd like someone beside becks. he put in a good defensive shift, but his lack of passing/burst was another issue in our failure to retain possession/build up anything.
